Why the hell are they so bad? Did he not recruit well the last few years or something? Is it really all due to the new coach being that terrible or wouod they still be terrible if Jimbo was still there? I'm very optimistic about what he can do here, but I can't help but be curious about what went wrong there.

I think we're seeing one of the big reasons that Jimbo decided to leave. I'm sure he saw some of this coming, and wanted to get out before the **** hit the fan.

Well, if he did recruit poorly, that doesn't appear to be the case here.

I've seen nothing to suggest Fisher can't recruit. If anything, the fact that we are flush with cash and facilities propped up Sumlin. He's not recruiting jack at Arizona.

Well personally I don't believe any coach wins a natty that's incompetent. Yes I know "hey what about Gene Chizik" but he had Cam, who was a generational QB similar to JFF. I don't think Winston was ever in the stratosphere of those two. The fact that Fisher has taken Mond - who seemed like a marginal train wreck last season - and transformed him into a QB that shredded a Clemson defense loaded with first round talent is nothing short of amazing.
What's amazing is that there are still so many posters that don't see what a difference a coach makes. Seeing what Jimbo has done to this point with Sumlin's guys should erase any doubts you have about his coaching ability. I'm not sure why you'd look to FSU at this point.

Do you think that has ever happened at A&M? I remember a 1996 season where we finished 6-6, lost to SW Louisiana, and capped it off with getting absolutely steamrolled by our arch rival. Not even calls for firing.
Coaching. Drop off at FSU is same as improvement at A&M from our incompetence from the last 6 years.

They were recruiting and coaching to fit a specific scheme. When a new coach comes in, they change the scheme to fit the new coaching style (change in teaching, change in scheme, change in the way you MOTIVATE).

Agree. But does not speak to lack of discipline, performance etc.
Their fans are basically accusing him of what Herman is doing at Texas. The narrative is that they recruited a bunch of skill guys but didn't recruit well on the OL over the last few years. I think some of that blame is misplaced, they signed a bunch of OL but unfortunately a lot of them got hurt or left the team. They don't have much depth there.
Taggart's offense doesn't help. They are not able to play with much leverage and end up on their heels.

I don't think you can just blame Taggert. They were not very impressive last year, either.

Have been wondering why the big drop off at FSU myself. Seems one of the biggest issues is the OL. Don't know if it's a lack of talent on OL, bad coaching or what?

He was 16-20 over three seasons at Western Kentucky.
He was 24-25 over four seasons at USF
Overall he is 48-52...what did FSU expect in hiring him?
Taggart can't coach, he out talented people at USF, with base HS schemes from Florida which all the players already knew.
Ironically the dude is more of a pro style coach and should've adjusted his scheme to the players rather than shove a square peg into a round hole. Never mind the fact he grabbed a triangle thinking it was a square and shoving it into round hole

They had to revert to a 3rd string very inexperienced QB, in a very good conference, and the losses were by pretty low margins.
Very few teams in the country would have done much better.
Their oline blows due to Injuries, busts, and guys kicked off the team

Jimbo Fisher is that good and FSU didn't practice due diligence.

He also had Quinton flowers at USF who was one of the best dual threat QBs in college football, just didn't get much attention at USF.
Flowers was recruited by SEC schools as an athlete, not QB, Taggart nabbed him by promising him QB spot, and Flowers put up the huge numbers when Taggart began using the "gulf coast" spread offense. He passed Tim Tebow for career rushing yards.
Taggart needs a QB that can really run in order to execute his offense.

This! I try not to be rude to posters here, but thinking FSU struggling is Jim is fault is one of the most idiotic things I've seen yet.
So OP is having pre-BAS...interesting! Must be a new strain of the ailment!
