GAME RECAP
Britt Jackson's 30-yard interception return for a touchdown with
6:30 to play lifted Southwest Louisiana to a shocking 29-22
upset over number 25 Texas A&M, its first-ever victory over a
ranked opponent.
Jackson stepped in front of a pass thrown by Branndon Stewart on
the right sideline and raced into the end zone to give the
Ragin' Cajuns a 27-22 lead. Brandon Stokley caught the two-point
conversion pass from Jake Delhomme to extend the lead to seven
points.
Texas A&M (0-2), which committed eight turnovers, had one last
chance to tie, but Damon Mason made his second interception of
the game at his own 14 to preserve the victory. Fans stormed
the field as time expired.
"There's never been anything this sweet," said coach Nelson
Stokley, who is in his 11th season at Southwest Louisiana. "I've
been around a lot of big wins, but our heart was in this one,
the players, the coaches. I'm just so glad for this team and
program. I think a lot of kids who have been here the last 10
years certainly had a part in this, and I hope I they feel like
that."
Southwest Louisiana (1-1) scored three touchdowns on defense as
Mason ran back his first interception 42 yards for a score and
Charles Johnson had a 17-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
The Ragin' Cajuns have four defensive touchdowns this season
after failing to score defensively all last season. Jackson had
a 54-yard fumble return in a 55-21 loss to fourth-ranked Florida
two weeks ago.
The Ragin' Cajuns had lost their first two meetings with Texas
A&M by a combined 97-21 margin.
The Aggies, who were idle for two weeks after a 41-37 loss to
BYU in the Pigskin Classic, likely will have their 109-week run
of being ranked in either the Associated Press or the USA
Today/CNN poll come to an end. Texas A&M is 0-2 for the first
time since 1988, when it went 7-5.
D'Andre Hardeman staked the Aggies to a 7-0 lead with a one-yard
TD run 1:54 into the game. Delhomme was intercepted by Donovan
Greer on the first play from scrimmage and returned the ball to
the USL 12. Hardeman scored four plays later.
Mason tied the game just over four minutes later and Southwest
Louisiana took a 14-7 lead when Aggies running back Sirr Parker
fumbled on a hit by Randy Young and Johnson rumbled into the end
zone with the loose ball.
Texas A&M had two interceptions and two fumbles on four straight
possessions in the first quarter, leading to 14 points for the
Ragin' Cajuns. The Aggies also committed 15 penalties, one shy
of the school record set in 1986 and matched in 1990.
"We made too many mistakes to win the football game," Aggies
coach R.C. Slocum said. "We are a young football team. We just
have to go back to work and try to get better.
"I have to get USL credit. They took advantage of our mistakes
and did what it took to win the game."
Delhomme, who was 14-of-33 for 128 yards and an interception,
extended the lead to 21-7 with a one-yard pass to Cody Romero
with 9:58 left in the first half to cap a 17-play, 92-yard drive
that consumed almost 10 minutes.
"We really needed that break in the second quarter when the
offense had that long drive, and that was beautiful to watch,"
Stokley added. "Great execution, and you saw what kind of
offensive team we could be. We needed that break... we were
making a lot of things happen defensively, but we were also
spending a lot of time out there on the field."
The Aggies pulled within 21-13 on a 39-yard jaunt by Hardeman
with 2:46 left. Hardeman was stripped by Mason at the 2, but
recovered the loose ball in the end zone. Stewart scampered 46
yards to make it 21-19 but failed to convert a two-point pass.
Texas A&M took a 22-21 lead with 7:58 to go in the third quarter
on a 48-yard field goal by Kyle Bryant.
Stewart completed 16-of-33 passes for 181 yards, four
interceptions and no touchdowns. Texas A&M had 399 yards of
total offense, 213 on the ground. Hardeman added 80 yards on 11
carries.
"It was a tough game," said Stewart. "Practically nothing went
our way. I made some bad decisions. We took points off the
board we had. Those interceptions I had and the turnovers. I
think we pretty much just kind of hurt ourselves in that game."
