Quote:

In a feature on Fisher in the summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football, Fisher didn't sound too thrilled with the way his predecessor, Kevin Sumlin, kept his office. "It's like a damn nightclub in here," Fisher told the magazine, which is on newsstands now. "This ain't gonna be my office."

According to the story, Sumlin's old office had dark carpet and black walls, which doesn't seem to be a vibe Fisher enjoys.

Since Fisher was hired to a $75 million deal, the richest contract ever given to a college football coach, his disdain for certain aspects of Sumlin's program has been apparent.

In the spring, Fisher immediately got rid of the music at practice (which was predominantly rap). He made those practices tougher and made the tight end a point of emphasis.
It's going to take at least a year to see if those changes make a difference and turn the Aggies into an SEC power. But until then, we at least know that Fisher doesn't want his office being mistaken for a place that could potentially offer bottle service.

There are reasons why Kevin Sumlin wasn't as successful here as we all wanted. But the color of his office carpet isn't one of them.

How is it possibly such a slow sports period that Ben Baby is filling his quota by reporting on another report about carpet and wall colors?

Didn't figure Club Summy was gonna be Jimbo's cup of tea. Whatever..... just change things ON the field and I don't give a damn what his decor style is

Sumlin was all about catering to the nonsense that recruits like.

Jimbo is all about projecting the values that will make recruits successful.

If you want to rap and have fun in the short run, you sign with Sumlin.

If you want to work and develop values for the long run, you sign with Jimbo.

Jimbo ain't gone be about recruiting "night club" players. Ask Jameis Winston.

Ok, bad example.

Sumlin worked in the dark. And thought he was way cooler than he actually was. Newsbreak! Also wasn't hand-on or very attentive to detail.

Agreed. There is nothing racist about this story.
For race to even come into the conversation is a testament to how F'd up our society has become.

No but him wanting to be cool and one of the boys was and is likely reflected by his immature office decor.

These kind of back handed complimentary articles actually help A&M in 2018, whereas they probably did not in the past. Anyone with half a brain (that's actually most people) can read between the lines and see the author is an idiot. Meanwhile, Jimbo Fisher is crootin' like a mofo. I wonder if he's coaching them up like a mofo? I'd put a couple bucks on it.

This sounds vaguely familiar to what was coming out of sips mouths a few years ago when Strong replaced Brown.

It is business. Not play. This music junk was bad all along. Why???

If you wan to play football they play. If you want to dance go some place that offers dance.

The expansion and renovation of Bright, the addition of the dining hall aka nutrition center, and the football only player development center aka weight room and workout facility were 100% the brain-child of Mike Sherman to create a football village and to expand and modernize Bright. When he got there Bright didn't even have clocks, which was quickly rectified with a synchronized digital clock in every office, meeting room and hallway. Obviously Sherman didn't live to see the outcome of all of that.

But I can guarantee if he did, or if Jimbo was the HC at the time, the HC office would not be that way, nor would we have the ridiculously stupid barber shop room or hot-tub room that look like it is out of a Vegas casino bar or strip club.

Bright is a place to work and improve. Yes the players can have some fun, but those "amenities" in bright, Sumlin's office, the way practices were handled all come together to paint a picture. there is a direct correlation to that and a 1-11 record vs. Bama and LSU under Sumlin. IMHO.

While I don't disagree that some of it is a little over the top, I do think the argument for having those amenities is pretty solid. 1) it is a place where the players can hang out, have fun, bond, and most of all, stay out of trouble. 2) Programs across the country are upgrading their facilities with over the top amenities as well. See Alabama's new barbershop or Oregon's facilities. Like it or not, they are a recruiting advantage and there is a competitive race to see who can get the best facilities.

So no, the amenities in the Bright building have no impact on if we win or lose games because other schools who have the same amenities seem to be doing just fine. It falls squarely on the head coach.

I'm curious how dark colors for an office are immature. Can't it just be a question of taste?

Really? I would label both Strong and Herman more "players" coaches same as Sumlin. Jimbo is not.

Herman wears a grill, makes hand gestures at opposing players, carries a bat, and throws pool parties. Jimbo wouldn't do any of that.

I like the coaches who don't allow the tail to wag the dog. Too much has been made about how everyone needs to give the players and recruits what they want in order to have a successful program...and then people wonder why so many gifted athletes act like idiots.

Great coaches focus on giving players what they need. It's the same concept that good parents use when raising children.

Some people are justifying Summy's pimpdaddy vibe and that is amazing.
College FB is big business today. The gym isn't a nightclub or a party den, it is a place of work. With proper goals. Music, pimpsticks and all those gimmicks have no place in a professional setup.

Jimbo's reset the culture and the players who want pimping will quit and join elsewhere. The serious ones who want to get into the NFL will stay and benefit.

Go Aggies!

agree.

Summy had a powerful recruiting strategy of being their "friend." But Jimbo has the superior one of giving them a better shot at the nfl. Making the league is the goal of most top prospects.

Jimbo is a player's coach just in a different way. He's definitely sided with players during shady events. Sumlin had his faults appeasing players, but he never seemed to place troubled players above the program. I also believe Sumlin is more of a victim of the SEC West based on his scheme and culture. ITS THE TOUGHEST DIVISION IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL. Sumlin will likely have some success elsewhere.
