This is a common question. Our process here really lays it out, but I'll also chime in here just for others who may be wondering the same thing.

First, it's important to try and understand the crushing poverty these families are in. It's difficult for us to understand being so poor that we watch our children starve, but that's what's happening in a lot of these families. So when your kid is crying all day from hunger, not able to go to school, and generally just living a miserable life, it's really hard not to consider any other possible scenario where life might be better for them. So the parents will send their child away in the hope that at least they will get to eat some fish they catch every day and they will be learning a skill that might help them survive and provide for a family in adulthood.

By the time we reintegrate the children, we've already been working with their families for 9 months or more. Our Ghanaian social workers are located all over the country and each one is assigned a certain number of families. They are amazing. They work intimately with each of these families on things like reproduction, budgeting, parenting, emotional coping, education, healthcare, etc. It's an incredibly robust and thorough process. They are in these homes weekly and bi-weekly for months and months. Strengthening the families, helping them become empowered and more sustainable. It's probably the most beautiful part of our entire process.

Over the last 7.5 years we've rescued and reintegrated 104 children back into their families (this group will make 116 once all home). Not a single child has been re-trafficked. Not one. I think that speaks volumes to our process and precision in tending to the whole child, whole parents, and whole family. Hope this helps!
