Actually Sumlin was a marginal to poor recruiter. Too many misses, not enough depth, not enough emphasis on OL and DL+LB, too many high **** WR that skewed rankings, etc.
That was all obvious starting in 2017 and never changed. We couldn't play winning football when it counted or tough SEC football when it counted as we didn't recruit to it.
Agree with this 100%. Sumlin never had a plan for the team, whereas you can see Jimbo has a development plan for each player (as both he and the recruits said today).
Randomly recruiting high-rated players can work at the second tier where you can out-talent opponents, but not against the elite teams.
And even then Sumlin's best rated classes were on the low end of Jimbo's average.
For all his reputation as an offensive whiz Sumlin basically let his OCs call all the shots, hence 4 completely different offenses in 6 years (KK, McKinney, Spavital, Mazzone).
