Just heard this on the tv. Apparently he was released from custody today. Not sure yet if he's going to play tomorrow night...

Just saw that. That could be really bad.

Jeez. Man, nobody should ever be forced, and rapists shouldn't get to play ball (or box)...but if this is just a ploy to win a stupid football game...

Glad I'm not Bill Snyder.

So, another sports "hero" gets in trouble with the Law. Yawn! Unfortunately, that is getting to be regular news these days.

The timing could be suspicious, but nobody knows anything yet. We'll see what they say in the next few days. Regardless, it sucks for the rest of the team to have that kind of distraction before this game whether he did it or not.

Let's keep this in perspective: he is a suspect in a reported assault, though he told police he did have consensual sex with the person. To my knowledge, he hasn't been arrested or charged, just accused, so let's not call him anything until the facts come out.

On the other hand, I've always said that when an arrest or charge occurs, the way to handle these situations is to suspend the player until the situation is resolved. There are exceptions -- when the charges are obviously phony or the player was arrested but not charged for whatever reason. I don't know whether this situation fits under one of those exceptions as more facts need to come out. But if it were me, absent information giving me HUGE doubts as to the validity of this, I suspend him.

What do you want to bet that Snyder plays him regardless of likelihood of guilt. It's all about the W baby.

Snyder may have no choice but to bench him.

Even if police wait until after the game to decide whether to arrest Ell or not and even if Snyder can fall back on the "presumption of innocence" defense, the alleged incident occurred around 3:30 AM...I doubt Snyder's curfew began at sunrise.

Looks like the accuser is a 22-year-old K-State alum who knew Roberson previously.

I think I read that the curfew was at 11pm so it sounds like he broke curfew as well.

Vegas had no choice, KState was terrible in their 1 game w/o Roberson.

Since Roberson is a senior, Snyder could play "hard ball", i.e. doesn't have to worry about hurting El's feelings for next year, etc..,

The whole thing sounds pretty strange to me. I would put the likelihood of Roberson being that stupid as even with the odds that he might have been set up. I'm in no postion to say what the story might be, but it just seems awfully coincidental that it involves the one player in a major bowl game whose absence would have the greatest effect on the outcome of the game.

Then again, he could really be that stupid and self absorbed. Who am I to say?

Roberson is presumed innocent and is certainly entitled to due process. However, bad behavior by athletes is completely out of hand and it shouldn't be hard to figure out why.

Sportsmanship has completely left the game. It is not even encouraged by anyone anymore. Players have absolutely no humility whatsoever and spend way too much time figuring out how to grandstand. Unfortunately, this type of behavior seems to be consistently rewarded in the form of media attention.

When society treats athletes as if they are better than everyone else, then we shouldn't be surprised when they expect to get their way at all times. If this means forcing things, then so be it.

I'm a huge sports fan and I admire great athletes. But I do not think that players deserve the elevated stature they currently enjoy in our society. It's not in their best interest or ours.

sports center is only reporting the curfew violations, and not the rape accusation.

If I were his coach, I'd issue the following statement:

"Certain allegations (charges?) have been made against Mr. Roberson. I'm suspending him from our game- not due to the allegations but for sheer stupidity. This man is supposed to be the leader of this team- what he has admitted to constitutes a complete abdication of any right he has to lead my men into battle Saturday."

Well, at least I like to THINK that's what I'd say...

whether it was consensual or not, he still violated curfew and should not be allowed to play! I hope Snyder does the right thing and yank him! And if he is guilty of assault, I hope they fry him!

According to a news article I just read on the AP wire services, curfew was 11 p.m. If his admission of "consensual" sex took place at 3 a.m., in a room other than his, then he broke curfew and should be disciplined on that fact alone.

I'm sure KSU has established rules for players and established penalties for breaking those rules. I don't know what KSU's rules or penalties are but similar cases I've seen in the news lately, regarding players violating curfew, resulted in a one game suspension.

It will be interesting to see the strength of Snyder's moral fiber.

Have you hugged your kids today?

Word in KC this morning is that the accuser has decided not to press charges because the accusations were bogus. Former girlfriend with and axe to grind.

Ell does not start because he broke team curfew, he will, however, play in the game.

Jeff Schwinn gets his spotlight moment, should be interesting to see what he does with it.

If the "consensual" sex happened in his hotel room at 3 am, then is that breaking curfew? He was in his room, right?

That was my first thought, Kyle. ESPN's story says he was found to be out of his room at 4:30am. It doesn't give any details about how this was determined though.

Maybe he got some good luck p*ssy from her two nights before the Big 12 title game, and was looking to recapture the magic.

Snyder will probably bench him for one play, or not at all. He'd start Orenthal if he thought it could help him.

Looks like Vegas expects him to play. He'll proly miss the first series only (curfew).

quote:
Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson is expected to play in tonight’s Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State but K-State coach Bill Snyder will handle a Roberson’s situation as a disciplinary matter for violating the team’s curfew on New Year’s Eve, K-State athletics director Tim Weiser said.

Not sure who to root for tonight... both coaches run very loose ships and care about winning more than rules, leadership, character, etc.

BS has the perfect initials. I loathe that guy. He's just so dang unlikeable.

I'm extra pissed because I need Ohio St or Tulsa to prevail in order to win the office pool.
