7 years ago, on 9/18/2010, the Fightin' Texas Aggies were down 20-6 in the third quarter after ending 4 consecutive drives with an interception against Florida International. After that 4th pick, the 12th Man erupted! Not in displeasure with the players or coaches, but in support of them. The defense held, and Jerrod Johnson got it together to lead his team to 3 TD's in the 4th quarter to win 27-20.
This was the same year the Texas Aggies started 3-3 with 3 consecutive losses to OkSt, Ark, and Tech; but they never quit. They would go on to be the only Big XII team ever to beat OU, Nebraska, and tu in the same season to earn a trip to the Cotton Bowl and finish 9-4.
This day 7 years ago has brought me back to where we are today as a fan base. We watched our team blow the 2nd biggest lead in major college football. We watched them struggle at times against 2 Southern Louisiana schools not named LSU. Now, when they need support, we have all but abandoned them. We complain about a lack of coaching and effort, but what matters is those 11 college students on the field and their teammates on the sideline. We have to come together as we did in 2010, believe in the team, and stand strong as the 12th Man. On message boards and in our conversations around work and friends, support our team. Show the world that this Spirit cannot be broken by a few bad plays and some poor coaching decisions. We are stronger than this. We are the 12th Man.
From here on, I am not halfheartedly and apologetically wearing my Aggie polo on Fridays. I am supporting my alma mater with pride because we are bigger than a football game, we are bigger than a coaching staff, we are a network of men and women prepared to lead our school, our state, our country through values rooted in College Station.
TLDR; Never give up on the players. We are the 12th Man; we can make a difference; they deserve better.
