To bad Sumlin turned in Kyle Allen! He would be a very seasoned QB by now.
Kyler had to go!
What was so great about Kyle Allen? Remove all off the field issues (and there were plenty) Allen had over a year and a half as a starter here and wasn't better than Trevor Knight this season. Which is fine, except that Allen was the top pocket qb in the country coming out of high school. He was never going to be as good as everyone wanted him to be
False. He started a grand total of 14 total games split between 2 seasons. 5 starts in his FR season amidst terrible drama with Kenny Hill and the entire team, plus 9 starts his SOPH season broken up between his arm injury and the last 2 games of the season.
Hardly a large and stable enough sample size to draw the conclusion that "he was never going to be as good as everyone wanted him to be".
If handled correctly, Kyler leaves and he stays and he is a 2nd year starter with more talent on Offense than the year prior. I think he would have excelled mightily in Mazzone's system despite people's notion that he couldn't have run the zone read like Trevor. True. He couldn't have done it exactly the same way or with the same effectiveness, but the kid had great pocket presence and footwork and could scramble well enough. He would have made up for his lacking in the running game with 10 more % points of completion %.
Then imagine him coming back next year for his SR season as a full 3rd year starter with 27 games under his belt and combined with Kirk, Merritt, Ausbon, Ford and Williams to play with in the OC's 2nd full season?
