I was talking with a co-worker today and they were saying how the only thing bad about the new Kyle Field expansion is that no more seats can ever be added. I said that I thought I had read somewhere about Kyle Field would still be able to expand to 120,000 seats if needed down the road (I think it was by updating the north end zone?). Does anyone know if this is true, or if there is some article/write up about this?
Thanks & #TowelOutKyle

We should worry about filling the seats we already have

Ask the Vikings if there is ever a limit to expansion.

Kyle Field can always be expanded. Whoever said that was probably saying in his life, or in the current era. In that sense, he's right...

We're like 50 years away from needing a bigger stadium, by that time we'll all just sit in our living rooms with VR headsets on thinking we're sitting on the 50 yard line. No need for an actual stadium.

No kidding, this was just a facts and trivia question.

Mark my word, we'll be the first 200k stadium in 2033.

Plans are already drawn up to take it to 122,512. Work is scheduled to begin after the 2018 season, unless something happens to cause the timeline to be sped up (i.e., a natty). There are numerous articles, but they've all got bits and pieces right and wrong. HTH. YWIA.

There's a limit on how many seats you can surround a football field with while still having a reasonably good view of what's going on

It just means everyone else might have to stand too.

Oh, and Jerrah figured out how to solve that problem.

Here was the CBS Sports article about Kyle Field. Earle Santee from Populous confirmed it's expandable to 120,000. I've always wondered where new seats could even be added, though.

Quote:

Santee said he originally pushed for a capacity of 95,000. Once that Aggie ego got done with the concept, the structure that exists today has room for a possible expansion to 120,000

Thanks for sharing! I think I read somewhere that the North end zone 2nd deck would be made bigger like the south end zone. But who knows

For the most part we don't have to worry about this.

Physically it can be expanded, but economically it won't be. The game of football will cease to exist before that happens. The only places left to expand are VERY high off the ground. That makes them VERY expensive to build. And since they're very high off the ground, they generate very little revenue.

Look at all the stadium expansions in the last decade (including ours) and they all include lots and lots of revenue-generating suites and club areas below the cheap seats. We are all out of this valuable stadium real-estate. Kyle will not be expanded further.

Edit: Also, the higher you go, the steeper you have to make the decks to preserve sight lines. Seats on the third deck already sit level with the floor behind them. Kyle has reached its maximum practical height.

They might expand some if the sips ever get a bigger stadium.

Just to make sure we stay on top and all.

You can double the east side 2nd/3rd deck capacity by removing the benches and making it all standing room only.

When enrollment hits 80k and all students are required to buy a sports pass we will be able to accommodate without incurring additional construction costs. We could actually turn a small profit auctioning off authentic Kyle field benches to those that bought the grass.

Of course that is assuming the added weight doesn't cause vertical dynamic deflection.

DD88, that has to be the most impractical stadium design ever. They would never expand Kyle like that.

Not nearly enough suites.

We couldn't even sell out our home opener against a ranked UCLA team.

Outside of the JM years, we have always had a problem selling out Kyle unless we were playing a helmet school, nothing's changed in the SEC.

Kyle Field capacity should never be expanded.
In fact, there is too much seating inventory in the current version.

When it comes to packing the stadium, Texas A&M's football program remains among the nation's elite.
The Aggies ranked third in the nation in average attendance for the 2015 season, according to figures released by the NCAA on Tuesday.

A&M drew 103,622 fans per game last season at the rebuilt Kyle Field, trailing only Michigan (110,168) and Ohio State (107,244). Capacity at Kyle Field for the 2015 season was 102, 512, the largest in the Southeastern Conference.

In 2014, A&M ranked second in attendance behind Michigan with 105,123 fans per game. Kyle Field's capacity for that season was 109,000.

A&M was one of six SEC schools in the top 10, with the conference drawing an average of 78,630 fans per game, breaking the all-time conference attendance record of 77,694 that it set in 2014.

You must know John Sharp.

The fact is, we wouldn't have had to cantilever the south endzone stands over the Bright Building but for Sharp's obsession with having a larger stadium than the sips. If these stands didn't extend over the Bright Building, we'd have about 97,000 seats, a uniform faade, and more suitable concourse space for that last tier.
