Let's start with the good news. Stellar defensive linemen Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall return along with safety Armani Watts, who made a team-leading 126 tackles last season. They will try to help coordinator John Chavis improve upon a defense surrendered 22 points per game and reduced its average yards per play allowed from 5.9 t0 5.4.

Now, let's visit the new parts. Oklahoma transfer Trevor Knight won the starting quarterback job under the direction of new coordinator Noel Mazzone. Knight will throw to arguably the best set of pass catchers in the SEC. The Aggies averaged just 27.8 points per game last season. That should be a third-quarter goal for this group.

The Aggies are popping up in several way-to0-early Top 25 polls, and they have the playmakers to stay there.

I have heard and read that we have the best receivers in the SEC for three years now. Only problem is:

2015: 5th in the SEC
2014: 1st in the SEC
2013: 1st in the SEC
2012: 1st in the SEC
That's great, except for 2015. Now the bad news:

SEC West standings:
2015: 5th in the West
2014: 6th in the West
2013: 4th in the West
2012: 3rd in the West

So, my question is, who gives a **** if we have the best receivers in the league? It doesn't correlate to better results in comference. Those statistics might lead you to believe the SEC is a running league....oh wait.

Well I know your thing is to be negative about anything Aggie Fb but you need to be fair, we had Spav calling the plays and God forbid he incorporate an actual run game plan. I think you'll see a lot of good schemes this year that open up for quick slants and allow Kirk, Reynolds, Speedy, and RSJ to use their athleticism to gain yards

As of this morning's 24/7 report, we have pending offers out to 13 WR, 4 TE, 3 RB and 2 QB.

We are "warm/warmer" on 5 WR and 1 RB.

The issue is we only had a good defense in one of those years, 2015. So, if our d can improve some more and our receivers play like they can we should have a good year. We just need no internal drama this year. Fingers crossed.

We're going to be disappointed this year, just like every other year. We'll have the players, but some really stupid in game decisions will cost us key games, we'll finish with a mediocre to decent record, show up in a second rate bowl, and probably play pretty meh in that too. Then we'll say we don't have the plates or the depth to compete with x team and we just need to wait for now+2 or 3 years for our recruiting to catch up.

I am almost positive this year will be our worst record under the Sumlin regime. We may have a few good players, but the atmosphere seems toxic. 7 wins max.

It could go either way. We have the talent to be dangerous if the offense gets going.

On the other hand my dog could get PTSD from the things I may scream at my TV.

I think it is more likely that we are going to have a pretty good year, after which Sumlin will leave once his stock is on the rise and everyone wants him to stay again.

Out of everyone, I'm not surprised you would be the one to surmise that having great talent at WR is the end-all be-all on team standings.

Like its the only component in this team sport.

You're probably right.

Well if it wasn't for those receivers, we might have finished 7th in the sec west the last two years. So I care that we have good receivers. Probably wouldn't have beat Arkansas without Kirk and Reynolds last year. We were dominating Miss St before losing Ricky Seals-Jones. It's clear that those WRs help us and despite some issues with drops, they are still an overall plus for us the past couple of years.

Would you rather us have bad receivers? Do you think that will win us more games? There have obviously been other factors losing us games than just our receivers.

Never understood why we brag about our SAFETIES leading the team in tackles. We've been doing this since the Jaxson Appel days, and all it does is highlight how bad our front 7 are.

Kind of like when we thumped our chest about Cyrus Gray leading the NCAA in return yards. You realize that is because the other team was kicking off to us (i.e. SCORING) a LOT, right?

It might not be the optimal look, but it is what it is. Given, in those situations, the reality, thanks should be raised to have players who can deal with it; people seem to lose sight of the fact that things can always be worse.

A major component of winning football is the ability to cover and compensate for weaknesses (from which nobody is immune). Those -- and one could name more than a few -- who want a new wagon every time a spring begins to squeak, seem to somehow consistently rock the end of the line.

The protectors of the realm have shown up to the zoo. I do not think we'll have a terrible year but I also don't see enough wins to set the program course back on the rise. Seven to eight wins. One more year for Sumlin? Probably.
