Should probably get this one out of the way....Martell's decommit is hopefully the final fallout from Sumlin holding onto Spav.

2015 should have been the first year with a new OC. Hopefully, this is a lesson learned about making staff changes regardless of their potential recruits or personal relationships.

At worst, Mazzone brings maturity to a position that needed it in 2015. The combo of Knight, Hubenak, and Mazzone set up a great culture for Starkel.

Optimistically, the loss of Tate is the final rinse of Spav and it's only custom building from Chavis/Mazzzone/Sumlin from this point forward. If Sumlin is the long term HC, this is just another lesson learned. He seems to rarely make the same mistakes twice and comes full circle when he can right a wrong (ie: Turner).

I agree witt the OP. I think people underestimate the effect Spav had on our program. Obviously dont know for sure but it seemed to me that he welcomed and cultivated the attitudes that we saw in Murray, Allen, and Martell. The im gonna get mine, entitled attitude. Glad all of them are gone. Martel would have been just like Murray and Allen. He would have caused dissent when Hubes beat him out next year.

We're still blaming Spav for everything I see

He was a bad coach. We witnessed that no "5*" could over come that. We are better off.

I wonder if Sumlin hired young OCs because he could control them or he thought they would be better recruiters?

Spav sucked. Deserved to be fired.

Swag

Either way what he did was hire someone who cant control a quarterback room. I dont think that has to do with age. Just maturity and personality of a coach.

Its funny how some folks still dont see how spav was the problem. I bet they still wont see it after our offense takes 10 steps forward this year. That is after taking 10 steps backward the last 2 seasons.

The problem wasnt talent.

Haha, possibly. The effects of timing and leadership are pretty standard - you hold onto a weak leader too long, consequences compound. That's my expert assessment from knowing none of them personally and spending work time on a football forum...in the offseason.

Spav was a terrible OC. He should have been fired immediately after the 59-0 whipping at Alabama. Because Sumlin didn't fire him, he went on to ruin three quality quarterbacks: Hill, Allen, and Murray.

It is going to be very hard for Sumlin to recover from this and we will probably have to spend some time in the "QB wilderness" as a result.

Ah, yes, I too have become an expert using the same methods. But I think you're right in that the coaching turnover has contributed to a less than rock-solid locker-room/program. Perhaps if we had de-spavital'd the program sooner, we'd have coalesced to a confident program and less prone to losing the recruits with wandering eyes

Sumlin was too slow to recognize and fire terrible defensive and offensive coordinators who he personally selected for those positions. Maybe you should re-think who caused the damage to A&M's program that you attribute to Spavital?

Spavital was terrible, but who hired him? When does the head man have to deal with his mistakes?

I actually 100% agree with OP...

Spav has had a head case entitled QB that was always overrated and under performing... Geno Smith is a great example of this.

I know all the cliff jumpers want to blame Sumlin for everything (and ultimately he is responsible for hiring/keeping Spav)... but Spavs influence should be considered.

Spav can definitely be blamed for some of this. He was great at getting commitments from 5-star QB's -- terrible at getting production

Spav was a **** OC and wrecked his five-star QBs. It remains to be seen whether any of them recover from his coaching.

Every season he gets beat up in the SECW. Its not as if the people paying his salary arent noticing the same thing everybody is noticing. They just know more about what they are doing than We do.

Maybe offensive Improvement this year will be key. Cuz the D is gonna be solid while Cheif is here.

I dont think Mazzone is the end game at OC. Lucky for him it wont be hard to improve much over the last two seasons. Unless the power run game becomes the focal point of the offense, he wont make it long. Maybe it will be?!?! But i seriously doubt it will, because Sumlin is his boss. I truly believe Sumlin will have to change his offensive beliefs or he gone. Soon.

You're kidding yourself if you think the issues over the last 2 years are entirely Spav's. McKinney struggled just as much as OC once Kingsbury left.

This goes to the top.

Hated the guys play calling and limited scheme but he only had Freshmen or first year players to work with.

Johnny's skills ran off the guys that would have still been here allowing the fish to be brought along

Spav sucked and Sumlin was made a huge error for hanging on to him too long. Jury is still out on Mazzone. Maybe he works out, maybe he will do about as much as Christensen did.

Sumlin won't get enough time to find out if Mazzone will work out or not- he's done. This circus needs to end pretty soon (and it's the circus, not the loss of a recruit). Hell, give the keys to Mazzone and Chavis for the year while you lock down a real coach.

Spav was just a symptom of the real problem.
