"The sky is fallling, the sky is falling! 17 year old kids havechosen to play football somewhere else. This is going to dominate my day. I am so sad. Our coaches suck."

Never mind the fact that so many 'five star' types have previously amounted to
nothing and that many of A&Ms best players have been guys whose recruitment
was barely noticed.

Caring about recruiting to this degree is a colossal waste of time. Wake me up on
national signing day when we get to see the guys who actually want to play
football for Texas A&M. And then, wake me up when those guys, despite high
school accolades, actually make an impact on Saturdays.

I think you're giving them too much credit by calling them "grown men"

I agree OP. Recruiting is important for a program but this is absurd

I hope like hell you're right, I'm really trying to be positive but it just keeps getting harder to be that way. Sumlin better hire a beast for a DC, we might get Mack back but I doubt it.

The problems with this line of thinking are twofold:
1. You are effectively discounting college recruiting by claiming that stars don't
matter. The numbers overwhelmingly prove you wrong. The fact that
"many of our best players" weren't big time recruits is one of the most
illogical arguments for refusing to acknowledge that 5 star players
matter I have ever heard. Maybe we should just have recruits write
essays on why they want to be Aggies and go with the most heartfelt ones.
2. You're "wake me up and call me" line is loser speak, pure and simple. THIS IS THE WAKE UP CALL.

Take it like a man. Stop trying to hide behind "oh actually we don't care
in the long run." It's pathetic and counterproductive.

Nobody is flipping back to the ags. We will flop yet again on a coaching hire. Kyle will have a lot of empty seats. But hey, we have swag which is all that matters.

Stars don't matter. Google Xavier Lawson Kennedy. Oh, TexAgs went berserk when we lost him. He went to South Carolina and rode the bench. Remember Rod Davis? 4-5 star DT that played for the Ags? Well, if by 'play' I mean played in practice. Jorrie Adams? 5 star DE. Nada. Siltch. What a big recruiting win though huh! On the flip side, Ryan Swoope? Remember him? Remember how happy TexAgs was when we landed him? Neither do I. Want some more examples? 'Stars are meaningless. Stars are projections to get fan boys all excited and giddy.

What is 'loser speak' is getting all depressed because kids are kids and finnicky.

I think you just pointed out a few exceptions to the rule but there is plenty of other evidence that states otherwise.

"Stars don't matter" is the definition of loser speak. It's such a factually incorrect statement that I can't tell if you're a real person or some alien sent from another dimension to spread misinformation and doom humanity.

Your four examples of how the recruiting star system didn't work out hold about as much water as a sieve. Do you honestly believe there is no difference between a 5 star high school recruit and a 3 star, when looked at across the board (and not with three or four anecdotes)? Your rationale is like saying graduating college doesn't matter in the working world because Bill Gates is a billionaire.

Thanks for the laughs.

ignatiusreilly2.

Maybe you should go back to selling Lucky Dogs.

For every 4 or 5 star that you can name that has made a big impact for the Aggies since, say 1999, I can name two that were 3 stars that made just as much an impact.

Uh. Maybe the reason we haven't had much success since 1999 is because.... wait for it..... we didn't have many 4 or 5 star players?

Okay? Cool.

Grown me spend a **** ton of our own money on the program attending games and expect those high priced tickets and donations to result in a winning product.

That starts with landing the elite recruits.

Not that difficult of a concept.

Alabama has dominated in recruiting and on the field for years. This correllation means nothing?

Same thing when Pete Carroll was at USC?

Stars may not matter but three top athletes have chosen to not to play for us, after a strong indication they were hours ago. We have no DC and we have regressed each year in the new coach's tenure.

You are being just as knee jerk to say you, and no one else should be worried about a DC search that will be approaching a month, and losing 2 of the states best defensive players...a HUGE need for this team. Eventually you need talented players to execute a DC's plan.

We've had 2 and 3 star players drafted and playing on Sundays.

We've had 4 and 5 star players play behind 2 and 3 star players.

I would venture that the stats on how a player does relative to how many 'stars' he was crowned with before ever stepping foot on Kyle field is pretty equal. Meaning - highly rated guys have success at the same rate as lower rated guys.

You act as if some web ranking services are the be all/end all to the measure.

Mike Evans - 3 star
Floyd Raven - 4 star

Who would you rather have on your team?

Mister Jones - 4 star
Jarvis Harrison (3 year OLine starter) - 2 star

Who would you rather have on your team?

Malcome Kennedy - 3 star
Spencer Nealy - 2 star
Terrence Frederick (plays on Sunday) - 2 star

etcetc

this is boring.

Recruiting matters. With few exceptions, more stars = more wins. Anyone who says otherwise is ignoring the evidence and relying on the exceptions to try an make their case.

And while I hope all the guys we eventually sign graduate and become All-American first round picks, and that all the guys that sign with other schools stay healthy, get their education, and flop miserably as football players, since I have no control one way or the other over a) where even a single recruit decides to play football, or b) whether any one of those recruits actually turn into productive college football players, I'm not going to get too worked up over things.

Malik was a huge loss but we didn't really have him from the beginning. I am not too worried about the rest since we still have 1.5 months until NSD. Get a good DC and we will be fine. If not...well...umm...wonder if they accounted for a tarp in the budget.

You won't that I was all excited and being a fan boy abou it.

I'll get excited when he is making plays in the next year or two, if that happens.

Stars directly correlate with rankings and championships. That study has already bee done.

Mack has shown he is a shifty flake. I wouldnt take him back if he begged on bended knees. When he gets knocked on his ass the first time(and there will be many) in college, then he might wake up and be a man.

Anecdotal. Actual evidence regarding recruiting rankings and results tell a different story. And it's overwhelming evidence. Sorry, but you're wrong. This **** matters.

And this "following a 17-year old kid's decisions is ridiculous" bull**** is a great argument if you're not making it on a site dedicated to college football and recruiting.
