AUBURN, Ala. Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn says he likes Will Muschamp's passion for the game.

He'll get to see it first hand after hiring Muschamp to be his defensive coordinator Friday night for a third tour of duty with the Tigers.

"I'm excited to welcome Will back to Auburn as our new defensive coordinator," Malzahn said. "Will is a one of the top defensive mind in college football who has great passion and energy for the game. He is a tremendous addition to our staff.

"Muschamp said he's happy to be back.

"My family, Carol, Jackson, Whit, and I are excited about coming back to Auburn and I look forward to working with Coach Malzahn to win championships," Muschamp said.

Muschamp was Auburn's defensive coordinator in 2006-07 and served as an Auburn graduate assistant in 1995-96. He was Florida's head coach the last four seasons, where he was named the SEC's coach of the year in 2012, before being dismissed late this season. He was Texas' defensive coordinator from 2008-10. He's also coached at LSU and the Miami Dolphins, among others.

He compiled a 28-21 record at Florida, including an 11-2 record in 2012.

Florida's defense is ranked ninth in total defense nationally this season, and his defenses have been ranked among the Top 8 nationally seven of the last eight seasons, according to ESPN.

Muschamp's last stint at Auburn saw his defense ranked third in the nation in scoring defense (15.4 points per game) and fourth in the nation pass defense (170.7 pass yards per game). During the same two-year time frame, the Tigers' ranked third in the SEC in total defense by holding opponents to 295.1 yards per game.

His 2003 LSU defense led the country by allowing 67 yards per game on the ground, the best mark by an SEC team in the 2000s, while Texas allowed 73.1 yards on the ground in 2009 to pace the nation.

From 2008-10, his Texas defense ranked No. 1 in the nation with 119 sacks. It was also ranked in the Top 10 in fewest yards per rushing attempt, fewest yards rushing per game and fewest yards per game.

Good. I eat muscles every now and then but none of them are champ-level.

Wow! I guess Auburn didn't need to wait until January to "do it right". Who else is going to snub us?

He would have been a bad hire. No way Muschamp will hide-his-crazy on another college staff.
