Will also fire athletic director

What is the future for schools not in the power 5 conferences, and really with no hope to get into them? Certainly this could mean nothing.

Unlike the NCAA basketball tournament, I don't believe the new playoff distributes much money to the other half, and the divide is about to get much bigger between the power 5 and lame leftovers. (However, I don't how it is exactly distributed).

New Mexico St, SMU, Troy, UNLV....put them down?

Going to be the future if many of these schools if the big programs stop playing them.

This one's a power play. 'Bama regents have been wanting to kill off UAB for years. Roll Tide.

Well, I hope Men's BBall can carry all those Title IX sports.

Supposedly this is all about Alabama (Tide) football killing off in-state competition for recruits and funding. They share a board of regents and this has been in the works for a while.

Most UAB grads pretend they went to Bama anyway.

there will be more shutdowns or drops downs to FCS -- and that's not all bad -- I mean the original purpose of universities was to provide education - right?

Hmmm...this sounds vaguely familiar...

An editorial in the Galveston Daily News, the state's oldest and largest newspaper at the time of Ross' presidency, went so far as to suggest that the school's agricultural and mechanical departments be transferred to Austin and the remaining infrastructure be used as a "Central Texas lunatic asylum." The feeling was that there was no need for two colleges in the state of Texas.

At most these lower division I teams, football doesn't carry anyone either...maybe itself. 64% of the athletic department came from student fees, direct and indirect institutional support, and state money.

That article listed the amount that other universities were supporting their athletic department. Many should probably shut down their athletic department and/or football.

The drawback for schools like A&M is if all these schools drop football, the days of playing 2-3 games against OOC teams that are way overmatched are gone (or 4 in the case of some Big Ten schools).

It would be great for fans, but instead of 11-1, 8-4, or 6-6 in the SEC, you are more likely to see 9-3, 5-7, or 2-10.

I don't understand the history here, but they could have dropped to FCS.

FCS, DIII, NAIA... ALL have survived without the FBS money

The number of FBS schools rose to 124 only because teams were playing so many FCS teams, the NCAA declared you needed to have a winning record against FBS teams, in order to bowl qualify. That brought teams like UNT and Texas State up. Many of those teams are only there for the revenue many have relied on.

They only get 2 million tops by playing 2-3 FBS power schools on the road. It doesn't carry any FBS program but can help the HBCUs and Southland schools which have fewer scholarships and lower coaching salaries.

This is why I see this as an outlier rather than the norm. Football asa concept is still popular enough to create their own D 1-aa playoff rather than just fold completely.

I would be good if they did not have a football program then they could offer more scholarships for other sports, like baseball.

The NCAA allows only 11.7 scholarships for D-I baseball whether you have a football team or not.

FYI...here is the story from ESPN.

http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=ncfnation&id=104283

quote:
Thirteen of the 15 trustees received undergraduate or law degrees from the University of Alabama, including Paul W. Bryant Jr., the son of legendary Crimson Tide football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

Only three board members have academic ties to UAB. One of them, Barbara Humphrey, is the wife of former Crimson Tide star running back Bobby Humphrey.

"Some of the folks on that board would rather destroy UAB than beat Auburn," said Alabama state Rep. Jack Williams, an outspoken supporter of UAB football.

Wow, just wow.

Any good dbacks or linebackers? Seems like there might be some special NCAA waiver for this situation.

A person would have to be fairly insane to think that these two schools recruit the same players or compete for funding.

No, but UAB does not represent competition for Saban's program, in any area.

This is certainly not a trend. There have been 38 college football teams added since 2010 and eight more planned for 2015.

Money does weird things to people. I have worked for people that did not want me to be successful because it may somehow threaten them. Stupid. I once attended a church where the pastor cut all ties to the church university and private school because it competed with funds available from church members. Stupid. I don't exactly see state universities in Texas bending over backward to help other universities.

the Bama - UAB thing is believable but there is probably more to the story. At the end of the discussion I am 99% positive the issue is money. Remember when I told you money will ruin college football?
