Has he mentioned at any point a desire to go coach in the NFL? From my knowledge he has been a college coach his entire career. Saban, Spurrier, and Petrino all tried it and came back to the SEC. Arkansas fan on here is claiming Coach Sumlin to the NFL. I don't know Coach Sumlin personally, but this talk seems like a bunch of nonsense to me.

I never remember him saying anything about NFL aspirations... Although I do not follow this as closely as some of you.

Probably because he's the first coach in over two decades who's actually successful in ways that matter to where people outside of Aggieland would actually want.

People assume that is his goal. And he has been offered HC jobs om the NFL. He says he wants to go eventually but wants to finish what he has started here first

If Sumlin stays and continues as he has, we'll prolly rename College Station to Sumlin Station.

Another way for rival fans to say A&M is one step away from becoming mediocre. Wishful thinking mostly.

Kevin Sumlin is going to be the highest paid coach in college football within two years... good chance after this season.

I don't think he's said that he specifically wants to leave for the NFL, per se, but that it'd be a challenge worth pursuing and that most coaches aspire to that goal (if I'm remembering the wording on his statements right). He has said that it's not a decision he wants to make for some time longer, though.

what is ambitious about going to the NFL?

most NFL coaches don't make as much money as he does now

Recruiting is arguably more challenging than drafting/trading

Competition in the SEC is closer and thus more competitive than anywhere in the NFL.

Not going to do the research, but I think "most" NFL coaches make more than he currently does.

It depends what he wants to do. Recruit whoever he wants to play for him, deal with 18-21 year olds, etc. or be given a team and deal with men, some who are dramatic and selfish.

Wouldn't think he'd be going anywhere soon. Pretty sure he's stated he at least wants to be here until his kids are done with school. He wins a natty within the next few years, and we'll give him enough money he can't leave.

Tend to agree with JonLobb. The only reason for a top tier college coach to leave for the NFL these days is if it's a Spurrier situation where the guy just HAS to see if he could do it.

But I think the experiences of Holtz, Spurrier, Saban, etc are cautionary tales for successful college coaches thinking of taking the jump.

I think part of it, is that many people still do not consider Texas A&M a destination job.
Since KDS is being successful, they assume he "must want to go somewhere else."

They are wrong.

Aston, I'm not doing the research either, but another poster did and I think they said something like 10 NFL coaches make more than Sumlin currently.

Of course, that's just salaries. No idea how the perks and bonuses stack up.

Why move from Texas to NYC for work?

People do it

I mean they are idiots, but they do it.

Agreed with this, and others. They're insistence that we'll be an also ran again as soon as Johnny leaves hasn't appeared to work out so far, so they needed a new direction.

After a bit of research, it looks like "most" NFL coaches make less than Sumlin, so I'll happily eat crow on that point.

Even Harbaugh is rethinking his decision to go to the NFL He'll be back in the college ranks within a few years. Money is great and all, but the demands of an NFL coach are completely different than an NCAA head coach. GM and owners breathing down your neck, not giving you the autonomy you were told you would get.

There are college coaches, and then there are NFL coaches.

Different breeds. Carroll is an anomaly. But he left USC in the toilet, like yesterday's burrito.

Seems legit.

That's pretty much what Spurrier said in the "Storied" episode. He thought he'd be in control at Washington, but instead had five different people trying to do his job.

*to Hawg's first paragraph.

Sumlin said he loved it here and had no interest in the NFL. That was straight from him. Competition getting abused in recruiting and desperate. Just enjoy it.

The media people who say that are the same ones who said that his offense wouldn't work in the SEC.

We have Sumlin through at least 2016 season. After that the buyout clause is not the same and he COULD decide to go to NFL
