Might be a dumb question but why are there two sets of hash marks on the field?? Nfl have wider marks?

The real question is how will the Tiggas know where they are on the field with numbers only on the 10s?

Thanks. Seems bizarre, wouldnt the more difficult fgs be at the wider marks? Certainly at least when youre closer to the end zone.

1. PLAYING FIELD
Both college and pros play on the same size field 100 yards long (with ten-yard end-zones) and 53 1/3 yards wide. The main difference on-field is the one-yard hash marks running down the ‘middle of the gridiron in the pros are aligned to the goal posts (70 feet 9 inches from each sideline). NCAA hash-marks are set wider apart – only 60 feet from the side – giving a wider field to one side and increasing the angles for field goals when the ball is spotted on the hash.

2. GOAL POSTS
The goal posts are also different widths. The college uprights are 23′ 4″ apart, while the NFL gives its kickers a much narrower target – 18′ 6″ between the posts. This somewhat offsets the extra angle college kickers face with their wider hash-marks.

Found it on and ESPN site, checked a few other sources and its a mistake. College goal posts were reduced to match the NFL in 1991. So both are 18 feet 6 inches wide.

HS has the 23'4" goalposts.

The NFL went to narrower hash marks to make their game a more offensive product. So with the narrower hash marks, the less advantage the defense has to one side. So it's almost like playing from the middle of the field on every play.

This same question screwed Sherman up for his first three years here.

Can the NCAA adopt NFL hashmarks?
