Beginning OC thread No. 468593...

My two cents, if it was me, I'd hire a guy with links to either the Florida, Cal, Georgia, or Alabama recruiting market and try to dig in deep there to supplement what we're doing so far. Now, I know Sumlin'll get the right guy, I'm mostly just killin' time and toying with the possibilities, so I'm gonna go ahead and turn around so y'all can see the bullseye on my back and start throwin' tomatoes at me.

===============================

Dameyune Craig (FSU): Here's a guy who's been lighting it up on both ends of the ball for the last couple years on the Florida recruiting scene... multiple five-star guys all along the front box and skill positions. Young guy, 38, and a QBs coach to boot. It appears he's also their lead recruiting coordinator. Would point out he's an Auburn grad, though, and I don't know what form of offense he particularly favors, himself.

Lawrence Dawsey (FSU): Another semi-young guy (45) who's involved in the passing game (PGC and WR). Recruits well in Florida, formerly at USF. He is an FSU grad, though.

James Coley (FSU): Another FSU grad, current FSU OC. Another good recruiter of Florida and only 39, but I doubt he'd make a lateral move that'd end up sabotaging his alma mater.

Brent Pease (UF): Older guy, formerly of Boise State fame, but a solid recruiter nonetheless. Don't know that he'd make a lateral move, though.

Brian White (UF): Grad assistant on the '88 ND title team. Solid recruiter, but gettin' up there in years... running backs coach, but has some previous OC experience.

Derek Lewis (UF): Real young guy, y'all might remember him as a former t.u. tight end. Tight Ends coach, but he's barely got into coaching and has very little experience. Been okay so far, but he seems to have recruits' ears. Here's his commits list so far this recruiting season: Dante Fowler Jr DE (5*), Matt Jones RB (4*), Jeremi Powell LB (4*), Kent Taylor TE (4*), Colin Thompson TE (4*). First year pulling down anything as a serious recruiter. Looks promising to my eye, but probably way too soon to start calling plays...

==========================

If it were me, I might take a flyer on Craig and Lewis... they look like the best recruiters in Florida right now. Hardly a scientific analysis though, I put all of 20 mins. into this research.

Maybe I'll do Cal, GA, and AL later, I'm just talkin' out my ass tonight. =p

I might consider Craig as a co-OC and definitely a recruiting coordinator, but not as THE OC. Guy has definitely proven himself as a recruiter, but that's not even half the job of an OC. Mainly the assistant are doing a lot of the recruiting, with input and evaluations coming from the OC and DC. But a lot of the actual grassroots, in-home, and personal recruiting visits and exploration comes from the assistants. I like the choices as they all could get some serious Florida talent (save Pease) but just don't see any that could seriously be an OC for us (even in a dream scenario).

I disagree with the whole premise...

A coach's previous recruiting territory should be very far down on the list of the most important criteria for who we hire. Their general ability as a coach as well as a recruiter needs to be prioritized way before territory. We can load up with Texas talent as is. It's a "nice to have" more than something to base the decision off of.
