When a game gets out of hand, when is the soonest they will keep the clock running, middle of 3rd quarter??
My thoughts..big lead at half, our 1st team gets pulled, Aggies continue to score. shsu gets worried about their upcoming games and pull their key starters..our lead continues to increase..run the clock

Explain continuous clock to me. It continues to run after an incompletion? Timeout? Otherwise, not sure how it is different

that's a good question. thinking back, did they run the clock in 2003 when OU beat A&M 77-0?

No, that game took forever.
A&M ran with a running clock against SC State earlier this year. The only time I noticed them stopping the clock in that game were scores, injuries, and called timeouts.

Plays that would normally stop the clock, such as penalties, incomplete passes, going out of bounds or change of possession, would not stop the clock, but i believe scores, timeouts and injuries would.

wikipedia says: "At the college level, there is no NCAA mercy rule. However, a continuous clock was used on November 8, 2003 beginning in the 3rd quarter when the Oklahoma Sooners opened up with a 49-0 halftime lead against the Texas A&M Aggies. This was agreed upon by the two coaches and the game ended with the Sooners winning 77-0.[4]"

TASO Football Ref here....

The practice is allowed by the following:

NCAA Football Rules 2010-2012
Rule 3, Section 2

Timing Adjustments

ARTICLE 2. Before the game starts, playing time and the intermission between halves may be shortened by the referee if he is of the opinion that darkness may interfere with the game. The four periods must be of equal length if the game
is shortened before its start.

a. Any time during the game, the playing time of any remaining period or periods and the intermission between halves may be shortened by mutual agreement of the opposing head coaches and the referee.

The coaches/administrators from the 2 schools just have to agree about it to make it happen. Normally in these games they'll talk at halftime and come up with a plan.

Yes, 77-0 was definitely a running clock in the 2nd half.

Kind of done on the hush. The losing coach will usually say lets get this over with. The officials will just not signal to stop, or start it when it should be stopped.

As much as that game burned, let's not forget that we were the only team all year to hold the sooners scoreless in the 4th quarter!

Going out of bounds only stops the clock in the last 5 min of each half anyway.

1. It's the last 2 minutes.
2. It always stops, just restarts on the ready.
