Why Aggie Football is about so much more than football

Just to keep things in perspective, rev you up for the football season, and remind you why Aggieland is so great....

I've posted about this before, but I started a thread on the Automotive Board:

Post Pictures of old Farm Equipment

We lost my Dad, class of '49, on Christmas Day 2011. This will be the first season the Aggie football team will have to get along without him in a very long time.

A lot of the antique tractor pictures are of ones he collected, and he is in some of the old photos posted. The thread is a fun one, and some neat stuff got posted.

But the thread took a totally different turn on Page Three, when Czervik 86 chimed in about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Note: his user name is now Cas Walker

Read it, I think it will resonate with a lot of Ags.

His post meant a lot to the family. Mom purchased season tickets again this year, even though she isn't very able to go, and not many of the family are able to attend often, either.

But my son, class of 2009, will be in the seats for the SEC opener. His wife (2008) won't be able to make it (med school) so he's bringing a friend who has never been to an Aggie game.

Say hello, make sure it's an unforgettable game for his friend.

This is indeed that Aggie football is all about. I am as competitive as the next guy and can sit and think of all of the gut punches (especially in the last decade), as well as the great defining moments.

But at the end of the day, Aggie football is about a lot more than wins and losses. Not only is it about standing together with fellow Ags, but is about family, friendships, and connections.

I have been going to all of the games for nearly my entire life, but this year I will likely not be able to make it to College Station for gamedays. However, I have made special arrangements to be there for the Florida game this weekend. As cool as it will be to be there for the SEC opener (which IS a big deal), I realize that nowhere do I see as many people that I am closely connected to as I do on gamedays. Whether the size of the tailgate is fifty people or just ten, I know that is one day I get to spend time with the people I love most celebrating one of the things dearest to my heart - Texas A&M and Aggie football.

For those who threaten to drop their season tickets every time we lose or the AD announces a change we don't like, remember that there is SO much more that happens on football Saturdays than what happens inside Kyle Field.

Gamedays are a family thing. And it is a multi-generational tradition worth keeping.

I would be willing to bet that a majority of the best people that you have met or spent appreciable time with in your life are Ags or Ag fans.....you find them in the damdest places doing some of the most amazing things.

Love it...Great read!

I am also bringing a friend that has never been to an Aggie game. He is an Arizona grad and wanted to experience a good college football atmosphere. There's nothing like gameday in Aggieland! Can't Wait!!!! (Bart Scott voice)

Canyon what a great story. If the picture below is one of your father, I must say he is the spitting image of my dad who was a farmer in South Texas for years after WWII. Must be the sun and weather worn appearance of those who love the land. My dad passed in 1985. This story brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.

Holy Smokes - when is the last time you teared up reading the Football Forum? Thanks for sharing. More importantly, thanks for the reminder in the midst of all the hoopla that certain virtues and traditions are more important than wins and losses. These are the kinds of folks that make you proud to be an Aggie.

Great thread.

I lost my best friend this year--an Aggie. This will be my first season without him next to me at games.

I lost my Dad on Jan. 3, 2012 and I got very emotional reading that thread. My dad was not an Ag (Clemson grad), but he loved college football and would always pull for the Ags.
