SEC DC AVERAGE SALARY IN 2010: $544,716 (assuming Vanderbilt spent similarly to Miss State)

Include Mizzou: $526,661

*=Currently HC at Florida.

So, my thoughts:
1. How do these schools afford to pay this much to a(n) assistant(s) while also being in the top 10 for highest paid HC?
2. I understand that throwing money at someone doesn't make them a better coach, and that these numbers are likely reflective of success at their program, but HOLY SHIT, we are going into a conference where the AVERAGE DC salary is almost 27% higher than what we are paying our so called "defensive savior."
3. Now, who off of this list looks appealing to you as a potential for Texas A&M Coaching Staff next year? Kirby Smart? Why are we not trying to poach Steve Spurrier and Ellis Johnson?

CONCLUSION:
Texas A&M, fans and leaders, it's time for something new. It's time to grow a sack, put two nuts in it, and start slapping *****es in the face with our dominant, prestigious, Tier 1 Football Program. Pony up some cash. We are Aggies we still donate to the 12th man foundation even after the past decade of shit, imagine what could happen if we actually competed.

Nut up Loftin/Byrne/BOR.

Thanks, and Gig 'em.

I'm bumping this. No one has anything to say about how our coaching staff compares to the conference we are about to join?

No one has anything to say about Steve Spurrier?

They have tons of "t-shirt" fans which you guys hate. More fans more money which means more money to pay coaches.

I say This in all seriousness..you have no idea what it takes to win in the sec. The sad thing is that i could give you a rundown on what it takes to be successful but you would just say "BS" to my thoughts and do it your way, thus repeating the cycle.

My concern since the last years of RC is that TAMU may have become a place where top assistants don't want to be. IMO, it's not just $$, it's also future prospects for advancement. Instability at the HC position has to make it harder to hire great, ambitious, young coaches.

It's not just instability at the top that hurts. It's also the culture that "someone must pay". That assumes that the staff is incapable of learning from adversity like the blown leads this year.

RC actually has a coaching tree, but IIRC the BMAs started demanding coordinators be fired in his later years. Fran never developed assistants and had to reach pretty far to get Darnell. Sherman had trouble landing a DC before DeRuyter. Now will leaving AFA for TAMU be viewed as career suicide for Tim D? I guess we'll see.

this is where the chickens come home to roost as a result of the AD spending / throwing so much money at the minor sports.

a lot of people don't think the money spent on the minor sports impacts football. Oh yes, it does.

many schools will make sure there is money available for their assistant coaches before they spend large dollar amounts on salaries for the tennis coach, golf coach, non-conference roadtrips, etc..,

Seriously, take 5 minutes on the internet and go look at the resumes of our nine assistants that our head coach hired .

Most had absolutely no bcs coaching experience and most had never signed a single top ranked player in their life. This is a guaranteed formula to fail no matter how many times repeated.

Inability to hire strong recruiting assistants is why RC, Fran and Sherman all failed in the big 12.

Our next coach must have the budget from the BOR to hire experienced strong recruiting coaches this time or he will fail just like all three before him.

Charlie Strong is our best chance at success if given the budget to hire 9 experienced assistants.

Any good coach is our best chance to fail if not given the budget to hire nine strong recruiting coaches.

Welcome to my reasoning for this thread.

I don't think this is our problem. Money is not the issue, it's allocation of money.

This made me laugh really hard.

Wikipedia says $1.3 Million.

This is so absurd. It doesn't matter which coach we hire if we don't have enough money allocated to hire a legitimate coaching staff.

IIRC, when Sherman was hired, there was talk of setting aside enough to hire good assistants, and in 2009 ESPN had us #11 in the country in assistant pay. Kines was #12 at $400K and Cromwell was north of $355K.

Edit to add: In the context of the extensions, buyouts, realignment penalties, I don't think minor sports are keeping us from spending another $1M or more on assistants. I think we can't hire anyone worth that much.
Our total has gone down since then, while others have gone up.

lol, yeah everyone, thats right, lets give every coach a raise for the crap we witnessed on the field this year. Lets add a huge bonus for finishing behind Baylor. That will really show everyone we mean business!

It's a good thing you understand what we are talking about.

It isn't about raises. It's about employing a staff that is competitive. You can't have a competitive staff when they make 33% less than those you are in direct competition with.

No one has suggested raises. Idiot.

The question is cause and effect. Do we hire suboptimal assistants because we don't have the money, or do we pay less because something else makes it hard to hire top assistants. I vote for the latter.

If that is correct, then the question is: why? I argue that Jackie and RC were able to do it, but Fran and Sherman had a harder time. I think Cromwell and DeRuyter are/were both fine (and are/were paid accordingly). I think assistants like Walters and Dat are based on the idea of young ex-NFL guys being underpaid while they try to learn to become top level coaches.

One problem for Sherm might have been that his network was people who would rather coach in the NFL, e.g. Reggie Herring and Cromwell. But I'm not convinced that is a sufficient explanation. I do wonder if my sense as a fan that we have delusional expectations that lead assistants to be thrown under the bus (or have their careers derailed when the HC who hired them is canned) is a factor is shared by members of the actual coaching community.
