I'm told that A&M regent Jim Wilson has reached out to UH coach Kevin Sumlin.

Houston's Kevin Sumlin would emerge as the A&M frontrunner. "He's the favorite of Aggie Nation," the source says.

Judging by the posts on this board, Sumlin is not "the favorite of Aggie Nation." But someone is pushing him and claiming he is. Could it be Jim Wilson? Rumors floating that Gene Stallings and Jackie Sherill are pushing hard for Kirby Smart. Would love to be a fly on that wall.

Is Wilson the BOR that was connected to UtayAg (Toole) and by default Byrne?

If so, is he pushing Sumlin because of the RC connection?

I am convinced that RC is the master of puppets behind these recent coaching moves.

Can't say I'd be unhappy either way. Some good HC talent this time around.

Kevin Sumlin is not our guy for the SEC. We need to start with a strong defensive leader who is willing to hire the right OC.

I think Power Players who don't know anything about football or athletics are making these decisions and I find it funny that everyone complained greatly when Sherman was the only candidate, but it appears Sumlin is the only targeted candidate this time. It may work out great, but there may be better candidates out there.

I agree. I was on the fence with sherman, but the AD should be in a better postion to make the correct decision.

Why would Bohls identify the leak in his tweet? That makes 0 sense and if it were true, he would get no more info from Wilson.

More like someone told Bohls that Wilson is pushing. My guess, given the feud, is that it is someone in the ADs office.

Seriously, this school doesn't need another RC coaching tree disciple.

Why can't Sumlin hire the right DC? It works both ways. After that it comes down to who can outrecruit tu and ou. Sumlin is a great recruiter of the state of Texas too. Is Kirby Smart?

What is the definition of "Aggie Nation" to which Bohls (or ultimately Wilson) is referring?

I suspect a person like Wilson does not include anonymous message board posters to be the "Aggie Nation"... rather, he is more likely referring to the old BMA's that finance the decisions.

Sounds like Interesting castle intrigue occurring as we speak.

IMO...if the choice is between Smart and Sumlin, then I'm going w/ Smart.

Both would represent the university well...both are great coaches, with great presence, poise and charisma. I just don't know how well Sumlin is going to do without his 'once in a lifetime' player (Keenum)...sounds too much like the Fran/Tomlinson relationship...(ie w/o Tomlinson, Fran was nothing)

Perhaps Sumlin is more than that...but I just don't want us to take that chance. Be Smart, Go with Smart I say

Sumlin may be great for us. He certainly knows Texas high schools, and his hiring would probably sew up our recruiting class, but power player interfence has burned us in the past. If he is the hire, I would not be surprised if the defensive staff is retained, at least partly.

Wilson was the reason we got Sherman

I would choose Smart as well, given a choice. Defense will be the key where we are headed. We need the first thought in recruiting to be defense, at least for a while.

The fan base. Again, just judging from the mood of this board, the fans aren't excited about Sumlin.

Also, does anyone find it odd that a regent is reaching out to coaches? Where is Bill? Where is Loftin? Jim Wilson isn't even the chairman of the BoR. Makes me think he's pushing him and trying to influence "Aggie Nation."
FJB

Who is influencing Wilson? I think that is the bigger question.

Sumlin wasn't here long enough to be an RC Slocum "coaching tree disciple." But while he was here, what he did with our offense after taking over in mid-season was damn near miraculous.

I'm not convinced that he's the man for our job, but he's spent a lot of time on a pretty damn good Oklahoma staff, and now he has HC experience. So just because he worked here before (and did a GREAT job, especially compared to his predecessors) shouldn't disqualify him.

The question is not whether Sumlin is a good coach or can put together a good offense, but whether he's likely to have success in the SEC or not. More specifically, is he our best shot at success in the SEC. I'm hearing a resounding no.

Judging from what I've heard from fans here and elsewhere, if the fan base was a democracy, Sumlin would not get the job. It would go to a defensive minded coach with an SEC pedigree - Smart or Strong. We'll see if the fans were right.

FYI Bucky Richardson and Sumlin are good, good friends - they hang out and their sons are on the same lil league football team. You know Bucky had been in Sumlin's ear about moving to the next level. And BofR still worship the ground Bucky walks on.

A&M has officially become corporate america----non experienced cronies making long lasting decisions that reflect poorly on the institution.

This sort of thing supports the argument that we shouldn't hire anyone who's ever been connected to the program. It clouds our judgement. Conduct a real national search for once. Get the best.

Another question Jim Wilson should ask himself: What would Sumlin's record be without a qb with 6 years of eligibility who's being considered for a Heisman and who played in CUSA? Sumlin was 5-7 last year without him.

Let's ask Tulane, UTEP, and East Carolina.

This whole Sumlin is nothing without Keenum is starting to annoy me. Really, if Keenum was a QB God how the heck did he end up at UH? Hmm...maybe Sumlin helped shape him a bit??? What do you think? What could Sumlin do with a QB recruited to A&M? For the record- I have no preference in who we hire, other than the fact that I think it would be a smoother transition regarding Texas recruiting with Sumlin.

I listened to Feinbaum interview Stallings on my way home today. He gave the impression that he didn't want Smart as HC.

If you are a big enough name, you don't have to "know Texas recruiting".
