obviously, it is very important to maintain AAU status...

any idea what the research dollars differential is between an AAU and a non AAU on average?

any chance for us to pull a nebraska and lose AAU because of conf switching?

what part of it is peer vote? i would imagine that moving to the SEC probably helps us given that SEC will have 4 now... possibly 5 if georgia gets added AAU... the B2 will only have 3 remaining AAU members now...?

Why would we lose AAU status. BigXII now has only two AAU schools to the SEC's 4. I don't think the AAU cares which conference we are in.

why did nebraska lose aau status?

found this gem:

quote:
"All the Big Ten schools are AAU members," Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman said. "I doubt that our application would've been accepted had we not been a member of the organization."

Iowa State, KU, and tu are all AAU I believe.

essentially...the big 12 has gone from 7 AAU (assuming nebraska) to 3... that's a big deal

A&M is no where close to loosing AAU status.....Our academics are still getting better and research is only increasing

I wouldn't be surprised if the SEC AAU schools worked to try to get UGA in.

UGA is a pretty good school. I am not sure what their research numbers are though.

This map is a little out of date since Nebraska and Syracuse are no longer AAU members and Georgia Tech is. I think Nebraska got kicked out of the AAU shortly after joining the Big 10. I've heard conspiracy theories that the sips had something to do with kicking Nebraska out, but that is probably BS. I'm not sure how close Georgia is to becoming an AAU member, but Georgia usually ranks very close to A&M in lists from Forbes and other publications. If Georgia becomes AAU the SEC would have 5 AAU schools compared to 3 for the Big 12.

The only way A&M will lose AAU membership is if the AAU ever reads this board and sees the horrible spelling.

A&M is in no danger of losing AAU status. We are 14th Overall in Research spending I believe with very few public schools ahead of us. Texas is behind us in research spending, though they have the larger endowment (our endowment is elite as well, 4th amongst public schools). We are the only Land, Sea, and Space Grant school and we are on the verge of landing an absolute monster with the vaccine deal that will put us in the stratosphere spending wise. If the US decides to get serious about oil and natural gas exploration it's really going to get crazy, we are the best Petroleum Engineering school in the world. A&M is already an elite research University and has the potential of being the largest public research University at some point in the future, we simply have the money, space, and resources that very few schools can compete with to go along with massive population growth in our state. The only controversy we had with the AAU was McKinney having a tiff with the head of the AAU who happened to be a sip. The AAU would literally have to kick out 2/3rds or more of its members to consider going after A&M, we are the definition of what the AAU is supposed to be about.

The AAU acts like a fraternity though. Many schools are members that are ranked well below some non members. They also don't put much stock in Agricultural research. The AAU has been going through a "trim the tree" exercise though which may continue to shape it. They had never voted out members until recently and now they are going after the old guys that haven't kept up. Iowa State, especially KU, and to a lesser extent Mizzou need to be careful. Georgia also is one of the best schools currently not an AAU member. With Georgia Tech recently being added and A&M and Mizzou as Conference mates and likely co sponsors they may be able to break through. It's highly political. There are several other SEC schools that are in the "next tier" that could elevate themselves if they work at it. A big part of what has hurt them is so few public schools in the South have been members and it is literally all decided on a vote of members. Hard to join a club when you don't have many friends in the club.

Getting rid of McKinney, or sorry McKinney's resignation, was a nice move to help protect our status.

From and article i read, Nebraska lost their AAU status on how they accounted the funding for the Medical Branch which is jointly funded with the State. with that money not counted, they fell below the requirements and were dropped.

I will see if I can find the article

From an AAU standpoint, the SEC made out like bandits in getting both Mizzou and A&M

In fact I'm not sure other conference can even look down at SEC academics anymore

It's pretty clear that the Big XII has gotten a whole lot dumber over the last two years of conference re-alignment

I read that article. Syracuse dropped out instead of allowing themselves to get voted out. It was HIGHLY political, the AAU president is a t-sip and he had an agenda against NU after they left the big XII. Several members said that they were very surprised by the move, and that they don't see anybody else getting kicked out for a long time, if ever.

bbspot,

I added the note about Georgia Tech to the post with the map.

NU had been close to losing it's AAU status for 10 years before they finally pulled the trigger. They had been the bottom ranked AAU school for quite awhile.

The problem with the AAU is that they have some weights within their criteria that go against agricultural schools, mainly do the the lack of competition for FDA grants in the farm industry. That was the primary cause for the AAU booting Nebraska and would be the main area of concern for A&M.
