I was a Senior in the Aggie Band so I was standing on the goal line of the north end zone at the half
As I recall the Aggies were 3-0-1 against Baylor from 1989 to 1992 and and we should have been 1-3
In 1989 Our offense had one decent drive THE WHOLE GAME, a missed two point conversion, a pick 6, and the Baylor kicker missed a 50 yard field goal wide right by inches as time expired for us to win 14-11 (honestly we had two INTs in the end zone in the first half and should have been down 28-0 with Baylor getting inside the 10 yard line 4 times and coming away with two field goals)
We tied in 1990 20-20
And I was there in 1992 while we were rolling to 12-0. And if there is such a thing as an ugly 12-0 that was it. nail biters all season. Jeff Granger one hopping simple toss passes into the turf.
We beat Texas Tech as I recall 19-17 when Aubrey Beavers blitzed on 3 and 9 and had Granger's jersey but he shook him and threw a strike to Greg Schorp for the 1st down. We drove inside the 10,m bled the clock, almost threw a pick, and got the Field Goal from Terry Venatoulious to win the game. The whole season was like that.
And then we were 11-0 going into Austin and they were chanting 11-1 at the hex rally since they were adding the loss they were going to inflict on us.
Ann Richards asked for the Aggie Band and the Texas Band to perform on the field together and play "Texas Our Texas"
8 Aggie bandsmen walked off the field (and were dismissed from the FTAB)
The Texas football players ran on the field intending to run through the FTAB
A bass player knocked the texas flag carrier out cold when he tried to break ranks. One of the Texas Football players laid the wood on a trumpet fish (he was urinating blood for 3 days)
The only reason the whole thing did not degenerate into a melee was John Mackovic ran on the field, demanded his players return to the sideline or not play. As a figure of authority recognized by everyone he restored relative calm to a situation that was on the cusp of an all out fight. So I applaud Mackovic for his intervention that day.
As for the Baylor game, it was a close run thing. But many games that season were. And Baylor had a very good team under Grant Teaff. I felt fortunate we had the record we had against them. The program slipped in the first dozen years of the Big XII but they have resurged now.
I would argue the upset of 10-0 K-State last year by 5-5 Baylor was the most shocking upset of the season. A&M's win over Alabama was amazing and impressive but the Aggies totally earned that win and 7-2 A&M over 9-0 Alabama was shocking but not as shocking.
Wonder why the 1992 game is back in the news?
