Can anyone provide me the exact quote and details such as who actually said it and when during the Sherrill era days?
Jackie and after an SMU game (in which I think Kubiak broke his leg) are both accurate. I think the year was 1984 (yr 3 of Jackie). Through year 5, Jackie already had two conference championships in the vault.GalvAg said:
Jackie S. said it after the SMU game in 1985. The quote was " Get your licks in now, because your not going to get another chance." This isn't exactly the quote but its really close.

With the 40+ players in their first year of action it just brought to mind the quote from Sherill when he had a very young team with lots of promising talent.Drum5343 said:

What would cause you to bump *this particular thread* from 20 years ago!?
you got right. It was 1984. Eric Dickerson had just run all over the Aggies in that game. Aggies beat SMU (and just about everybody else in 1985).Just Tired said:Jackie and after an SMU game (in which I think Kubiak broke his leg) are both accurate. (20 year old post bump)
With about FORTY scholarship players on the roster seeing their first chance at meaningful snaps this season, Jimbo may want to dust off this old Jackie Sherrill quote.
Like most Jimbo teams I see the gradual improvement as you go through the season, it's just hard to rush experience with a team this young.
The old adage that you'd lose a game for every true freshman you start probably doesn't apply to the same degree in this day and age of college football but there is still some truth there that gave me pause before the season started. My hopes rested with Haynes King being the guys with the "it factor". We had see so little of him it just hard to know for sure it wasn't there. But after 3+ games this year I think we can say the "it factor" isn't there.
With that being said If we are going to go through growing pains this year then we need to get Weigman ready if Jimbo thinks his upside is greater than King's. If Weigman plays in the final 6 games this would cement 2022 as year 1 on his eligibility clock and allow you to start recruiting behind him.

Teams seem to get an awful lot of licks in before we lick em back.
