Can anyone provide me the exact quote and details such as who actually said it and when during the Sherrill era days?

Jackie S. said it after the SMU game in 1985. The quote was " Get your licks in now, because your not going to get another chance." This isn't exactly the quote but its really close.

With about FORTY scholarship players on the roster seeing their first chance at meaningful snaps this season, Jimbo may want to dust off this old Jackie Sherrill quote.

Like most Jimbo teams I see the gradual improvement as you go through the season, it's just hard to rush experience with a team this young.

The old adage that you'd lose a game for every true freshman you start probably doesn't apply to the same degree in this day and age of college football but there is still some truth there that gave me pause before the season started. My hopes rested with Haynes King being the guys with the "it factor". We had see so little of him it just hard to know for sure it wasn't there. But after 3+ games this year I think we can say the "it factor" isn't there.

With that being said If we are going to go through growing pains this year then we need to get Weigman ready if Jimbo thinks his upside is greater than King's. If Weigman plays in the final 6 games this would cement 2022 as year 1 on his eligibility clock and allow you to start recruiting behind him.

Jackie and after an SMU game (in which I think Kubiak broke his leg) are both accurate. I think the year was 1984 (yr 3 of Jackie). Through year 5, Jackie already had two conference championships in the vault.

With the 40+ players in their first year of action it just brought to mind the quote from Sherill when he had a very young team with lots of promising talent.

I know we are in year 5 but the last 1-2 years have seen a huge bump in recruiting following the Orange Bowl championship. I know Jackie had a couple of SWC championships by year 5, but they weren't in the SEC West in 1985-1986.

Anyway I just thought the quote fit and was trying to remember the quote exactly. When I tried to search for the quote on google it found that old 2002 TexAgs thread.

you got right. It was 1984. Eric Dickerson had just run all over the Aggies in that game. Aggies beat SMU (and just about everybody else in 1985).

Was at the game. Worried that Kubiak was dead for a few seconds. Dickerson had 200 yards on 14 carries and still said that was the hardest he had been hit in a game. Went to a great frat party after the game. Impressive array of expensive sports cars parked outside.

I'm sick of the bull**** "our team is young" excuse. I have been hearing that crap for decades.

yeah I think you're right… probably something his publicist suggested to make the parallel to jackie but Jackie was the original and the only one to deliver on it.

They've been getting their licks in for 30+ years of "half the teams lost today" and "hold the rope" and "we run this state" and "we ain't done yet" and quite frankly I wish we'd stfu and win something before we start yapping.

Dickerson played for SMU 79-82. He was the second player drafted in 83 behind Elway in the QB class that included Jim Kelly and Dan Marino. The Ponies finished ranked #2 in 82 and beat Pitt/Marino in the Cotton Bowl. Jackie said it after SMU trashed us in 82 (Texas Stadium). They beat us 10-7 at Kyle in 83. The 84 game (if memory serves) was a tight one at Texas Stadium. We beat them at Kyle in 85 on a last second field goal. Cleared the crossbar by a solid six inches.
