He has officially removed his name from consideration. That's all I know.

When Kentucky was looking for a coach, and Gillispie was rumored to be the guy, Barnes randomly announced to the media that he was removing his name from consideration. There was no speculation (that I remember) that he was a candidate.

Yep...

He removed his name from consideration despite the fact it wasn't being considered.

Therefore any coaching vacancy, in any sport, can receive the obligatory Barnes has already withdrawn his name from consideration comment.

It's like a guy sees the hottest girl in the room, notices she's alone, approaches her and makes it clear that he's not interested, then walks away.

Ahhh, yes. The TexAgs myth making machine at work. Repeat it long it enough, and it eventually becomes "fact" (as far as Aggies are concerned).

Just Google "Rick Barnes Kentucky" and you will see that Andy Katz (of ESPN) was reporting that a Kentucky source was telling him that Barnes was Kentucky's "Plan B" (after Florida's Billy Donovan turned them down).

At that point, Barnes withdrew his name, and the Wildcats went for Gillespie.

Lighten up, Francis...

Here is a quote from the article:

quote:
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Time for Plan C. Florida's Billy Donovan, regarded as the top candidate for the prestigious Kentucky job, dispelled rumors of his departure Thursday, and Wildcat officials have now been told second-favorite Rick Barnes has no intentions of leaving Texas.

Only hours after Donovan announced he was staying put at Florida rather than take over Kentucky's tradition-rich program, sources told ESPN.com that Barnes will remain in Austin.

It's a horrible joke. Vastly overused, especially when you see it still rampant in current times. BCG was hired and fired already from Kentucky, yet every time an IHOP waitress quits, TexAgs geniuses think it's hilarious to throw that old joke out again. There's something to be said for originality, and TexAgs usually lacks in that department.

Except for the VY/Cote notes, of course. Those are pure gode.

mpaggie06 has been fired from this thread.

Rick Barnes immediately pulled his name from consideration as his replacement.

P.J. Tucker is still dribbling out the shot clock.

Ken Wood's punt is still rolling on the field.

OU is still trying to run the ball up the middle against Von Miller.

That's not the only example of Rick Barnes removing his name from consideration. Just this week, he held a press conference turning down the DC position.

In a related story, Rick Barnes removed his name from consideration for merger with the Big 10 even though he had yet to be contacted.

And this is the funny thing about the UK job. Many speculated he withdrew his name because he wasn't going to get an offer:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2827764

quote:
Later Thursday afternoon, speculation moved to Barnes as Kentucky's top choice. But by early evening he had withdrawn his name, saying he would stay at Texas. Sources have given conflicting information about whether Barnes decided he was not interested on his own, or if he learned that he was not at the top of Kentucky's list.

Where, in the sip dbag's post, does it prove that Barnes was ever offered the UK job? It only mentions that he removed his name from consideration. That's the joke dumbass...and that wasn't the only time Barnes has pulled that crap.

These inside jokes are essentially TexAgs traditions. Being Ags, we generally like traditions and so they endure.

Like all traditions, they are a little silly from the outside looking in. This tradition is no less meaningful than chasing down the yell leaders after a win and tossing them in fish pond. Why we do it really can't be rationally explained and there will always be a group of folks that view them as meaningless, silly and unoriginal and, therefore, can't help but whining about it at every opportunity.

Ironically, another TexAgs tradition is whining about TexAgs. This too is difficult to rationalize and unoriginal, but yet it endures.

And poor Nebbe.

There was indeed some talk about Barnes among the sportswriters in town. The consensus at that time was that if they wanted a coach that would underutilize talent and lose in the 2nd round, they should have kept Tubby. In fact, Smith's resume at UK was considerably better than Barnes'.

I'm here. Thanks for your concern.

You guys are funny.

I don't know anything about Barnes' reputation for pulling his name out of consideration for other jobs, especially before he came to Texas.

My post was only about dispelling the idea that he pulled his name from consideration before there was "any talk" of him being considered for the Kentucky job.

Sorry if it came off as rude, or arrogant, or whatever. You guys have fun with your little jokes. I realize not every "inside joke" has to be based in "fact".

I mean, I'm sure no one on this thread has ever had a sheep for a girlfriend, despite the jokes that get thrown around on Longhorn boards.

No, the ironic part is while you were tooling around here trying to figure out the meaning of a 12-year old joke that you could probably have googled to figured out, you managed to make me hate the joke even more than I already did, by not using it in the proper manner. Irony is indeed a b1tch.
