Howdy Ags!
If you haven't heard about it already, I'd like to take this opportunity to share some very exciting news with you about a new partnership between Texas A&M and PepsiCo - a partnership that will bring more choice, support and sustainability to our campus and the 49,000-plus students.
PepsiCo is known to most of us for its broad portfolio of beverages, including flagship Pepsi-Cola. In addition, PepsiCo provides Gatorade sports drinks, Aquafina water, Lipton teas and SoBe and Propel waters. In addition, Frito-Lay snacks, including the popular SunChips line, are part of the power of one PepsiCo.
As you may know, Coca-Cola has been the university's major beverage supplier for a number of years. The contract was up for renewal this year and I had the privilege of serving on a nine-person working team to review proposals from various companies wishing to provide beverages and related products on our campus. Following an extensive review of the proposals, there was no question in my mind that PepsiCo was the ideal choice for Texas A&M. I say this not only because the partnership will provide enhanced financial support for the university, but more importantly this is a win-win situation for us because this partnership goes well beyond money.
On your behalf, I was completely in the loop throughout the contract negotiation process, and I am truly excited about the great opportunities that lie ahead for the student body. PepsiCo is an outstanding organization and I believe its leaders truly understand the nature of Aggieland and are firmly committed to helping students succeed in a big way. Texas A&M and PepsiCo have shared values.
Please allow me to explain. First of all, PepsiCo will officially kick off activities on our campus during Residence Hall Move-In. Trust me, it will be unlike anything we've seen before. In addition to campus volunteers, local Pepsi beverage company and Frito-Lay employees will dedicate their time, trucks and handcarts to help students and their parents move into their dorm rooms. And, to help ease the burden of moving tons of boxes, refrigerators, electronics and other items, students and their parents will receive free snacks and beverages courtesy of PepsiCo. They also will receive "goodie baskets" with items such as free Pepsi-related products and coupons.
But what I'm most enthusiastic about is PepsiCo's support for a service project that all Aggies hold near and dear - Big Event. To show support for Big Event, the nation's largest one-day student-run project, Frito-Lay headquarters, Pizza Hut headquarters and local Pepsi beverage company offices will close for the entire day to help students give back to the local community. In addition to providing snacks and beverages to students, PepsiCo representatives have volunteered to actually help out with some of the service projects. What an extraordinary way to help Aggies give back to a community that we love so much. Also, a huge outdoor concert for students and the local community is being planned to end the day's festivities. I will certainly provide more details about the free concert as they become available.
Also, thanks to PepsiCo, our sustainability efforts will be enhanced through the purchase of additional recycling bins and improved communication and outreach support.
I hope you will agree that this new partnership is very good news for our campus. And for Dr Pepper lovers, no worries. Dr Pepper and Diet Dr Pepper will still be available and sold on our campus.
Let's give our new friends at PepsiCo a warm Aggie welcome.
God Bless and Gig 'em,
