I had heard years ago that he had family ties to A&M and desperately wanted to play for us, but that the coaching staff had no interest and would not return his calls (supposedly because of his size).

Hard to beleive as he was the 5A Offensive Player of the Year and took Westlake to a 16-0 season and a state championship.

Any truth to this story?

He had an ACL injury his junior year and both Texas and A&M backed off recruitment. Though I do believe Drew has said he wanted to play for A&M.

I believe he had an injury which caused the major Texas schools to disregard him. That and his height.

Hindsight is 20/20. I remember when all the Texas fans were wondering why on earth were we offering a scrawny 2A QB. That QB was Colt McCoy.

No sense in crying over the lost opportunities. A&M has had some good quarterbacks recently who would have thrived under the right coaches. I liked Mark Farris quite a bit as well as Dustin Long.

i think we were on a QB named applewhite and spurned brees, then got left at the altar when applewhite switched.

What's funny is that Drew Brees' parents actually went to Baylor, and He wanted to go there but the coaches at Baylor at the time (Roberts) thought he was too small. Man, Baylor could've done a lot better had they had some cujones back in the day. Then they turned to Failmaster Steele. Uggh.

Yeah, both parents Chip and Mina went to A&M. Class of '72. His brother Reid played baseball at Baylor.

Brees actually decommited on signing day and signed with Purdue because one of his parents wanted im to go there and their coaches negatively recruited. duh.

same with every other recruit in the world.

I heard on The Ticket earlier that Purdue was the only D1 school to offer him a scholarship. So, we aren't the only school that screwed the pooch.

Before Drew got to Purdue ... they were known around these parts as Pur-don't. Anyway, if it makes you feel any better ... Drew is gonna spend a lot of time on his butt on Sunday. Colts by 14.

Ironically ,Westlake LB Bryce Hager, (son of tu all-american ,and 10 year NFL veteran) and this years 5A allstate midddle LB at 6'1" 215 4.5.Wanted desperately to play for Ags, but was told that we already promised ship to Nelson.He goes to Baylor, We will regret the miss, it was stupid move on our part.

That was bad luck that Nelson caused you to miss out on Hagar. I too think he will be fantastic at Baylor. Not sure why he was such a sleeper (just a ** recruit on rivals).

I believe Kevin Sumlin was responsible for recruiting Brees to Purdue. He was an assistant there at the time. That is what I have heard.

I seem to recall we recruited another top QB that year in Columbus, TX QB Matt Shobel. Ags promised him he would be only QB we take and passed on Brees. Bad Call!

Apparently, Shwan Slocum told Brees that he didn't have a D1A arm. Its been pointed out that if Brees had gone to A&M, he'd be a prominent insurance salesman right now.

No one in Texas wanted me because of my knee problems and height. I had offers from Purdue and Kentucky. I had great times are Purdue and don't regret a thing.

Hager was a fullback until this year,but was the most prolific LB in state this year,he did all he could to go to A&M but our stupidity cost us.We never have a back up plan. we should always oversign and we know it ,but we don't. we dig our own grave,year after year.

I saw the greatest interview with him on Fox this year. They asked him why he went to Purdue and his response was "I could not get any offers from any Texas schools."

I laughed when I heard this because I could not help but think about what texags would have said if the prize player from our school said he only came here because no one else wanted him (i.e. it was my last choice). Talk about a kick in the balls....

this has been discussed ad nauseum on here.

A&M whiffed on Brees, as did every other college in Texas and every major program in the nation.

Never mind the fact that in A&M's offense at the time he wouldn't have been properly utilized and wouldn't be the Drew Brees we all know today
