From a Brent Z blog post

quote:
Down in Houston, it seems there's an appreciation for what is A&M's most fertile recruiting ground — recruiting comes up in Houston, a lot — and there's some serious BMA's sitting in the crowd, soaking in every word. Guys who could make or break a coach's career.

(If you have to ask what BMA stands for ...

George Mitchell is making a case for himself...he definitely has the cash (for those who do not know, after he got out of the oil business, he bought and developed the Woodlands...and yes, the city)

Also Archie McFerrin is pushing his name to the top recently. I think those two have my votes for recent "Top BMA's"

Clayton Williams will always be up there.

In order of BMA status:

1) George P. Mitchell. Mitchell sold his oil company for $3.5 billion, and built a city. He's always giving back to A&M, with the largest gift being $50 million for the new Physics and Astronomy building. He also built the new tennis center, and is constantly writing A&M checks for a million and change.

2)Lowry Mays. He created Clear Channel Communications....I'm sure his net worth is well into the billions. He donated $15 million in '96 to build Wehner (the palace that houses Mays Business School). He has been known to exert influence on the football program.

3)Clayton Williams. Another billionaire oil man. A lot of us got our rings in the Clayton Williams Alumni Center, which he donated $11 million for. His name is in front of the zone...certainly a very generous and very big BMA.

It will be interesting to see how much the CEO of Saudi Aramco gives back. The dude’s gotta be loaded.

Also, we can't leave Michael Halbouty off the list. And perhaps the Blue Bell family.

Aramco currently sponsors students through the International Programs Office - Sponsored Student Programs at A&M.

Let's not forget H.R. "Bum" Bright, who helped bring Jackie Sherrill to A&M. He gave $25 million to A&M in 1996. Although, he's no longer with us.

Oh, and Donald A. Adam, who donated a large sum to help bring the Bush Library here.

I knew Glenn McCarthy was a former student, but didn't know if he had ever been involved with the university post-college.

T. Boone would have been a BMA had we not cut him from the basketball team and sent him packing to Okie Light.
