The University of Georgia - one of the most uniquely "Southern" states, which still has a state flag pattered after the Confederate Stars and Bars...uses as their fight song a tune written to honor Union Troops as they were "trampling" on the South.

The irony is fascinating. Not saying it's good or bad (I'm a proud southerner and I think the Battle Hymn of the Republic is the greatest song ever written in the English language). It's just odd.

Isn't this their flag? What's "confederate" about it?

Here's a word of advice - when in Athens for a Georgia game, don't make jokes about Sherman. They didn't find it nearly as witty as I did.

Decade,

That is the "Stars and Bars," which was the first national flag of the Confederacy. Here are two links: http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-csa1.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America. Presumably the symbol in the middle is a Georgia state symbol.

The flag that most associate with the Confederacy is the Confederate Battle Flag.

(Edit added wikipedia citation, which is much more detailed, especially with regard to Georgia flag)

Every time I heard that fight song tonight (which was a lot) it reminded me of that junior college up in Austin's fight song...It starts off sounding like that "Ive been working on the railroad" song

William C G, you're absolutely right - I forgot entirely about the Stars & Bars...it is indeed nearly identical.

So now Georgia sucks, thost racist bastages!

Decade, you may be the winner of the Texags photoshop trophy, but you obviously don't know your history.

This is the confederate battle flag, the one used by the troops in combat for identification.

This is the Stars and Bars, the official flag of the confederacy:

I already mea culpa'd though aalan...you don't get two of 'em, esp. on New Year's Day

btw, the state flag was changed from the one mentioned by the original poster (confederate battle flag lookalike) to another one in 2001 and then in 2003 it was changed again to the one above.

other states still proudly display their confederate "heritage" on their flags, though.

Yet another example of how completely not original tu is and how they have to steal every single "tradition" they have from other schools.

Technically, the top flag in aalan's post is the Confederate Navy Jack. The Navy Jack was rectangular, the Confederate battle flag was square.

On edit, I had the same thoughts about the fight song....

Back to the original subject, while we all know that tune as the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," the tune was actually written several years before the Civil War (by someone from South Carolina) and sung as a "campfire spiritual." Union troops adopted the tune and put it to different words ("John Brown's body is a lyin' in the grave...but his truth is marching on!" ). Julia Ward Howe didn't like the words the soldiers used, and so wrote the lyrics that we're all familiar with.

Its, "glory glory to old Georgia."

They re-worded it.

My dad is a Dawg.

They still talk about the burning of Atlanta by Sherman.

When we visit, you see lots of stars and bars on trucks. I think it is less about the civil war, and more about state pride now days though.

The Confederate battle flag was unfortunately co-opted by racist groups. It was not originally a racist symbol.
It never flew over slave quarters. It was a battle flag one identifying confederate troops fighting for State's rights not fighting for slavery.

The fight over State's rights versus National rights was the cause of the Civil War not slavery. If slavery had been totally eradicated in the South there still would have been a Civil War.

BINGO...we have a winner!

I personally believe that the general population of this nation would never have a problem with this flag as a representation of history or southern pride, etc had the hate groups not adorned it like/with the nazi swastika.

as for recruiting being SOOO hard with the confederate flag, lets take a look at their recruiting classes for the last few years according to rivals.

so far 2008 - #3
2007 -- #9
2006 -- #4
2005 -- #10

I would love these classes here over the past few years

Um, no. States rights was all about states rights to determine the legality of slavery. Non slave owning soldiers were persuaded that they were fighting for something other than slavery so that they would fight.

The cause of the Civil War was slavery. The motivation for many of the fighters in that war, may have been something else. Lee couldn't command an army that would be attacking his home state. Other Southerners fought for romantic notions.

Sam Houston was right in his opposition to the war and his opposition to having Texas join in it.

What we should let go of are the romantic lies we tell ourselves about the war. The veterans and their children are all gone now. Let it go.

Exactly...What gets me is that the kkk used the Stars and Stripes years before they adopted the Confederate battle Flag or the navy jack and still use it today, but no one ever wants to say anything about that.

Don't like Sherman 'round here.

And I say, "Hey, Lama!
"How about a little something, you know, for the effort?"
And he says, "There won't be any money...but when you die, on your deathbed...you will receive total consciousness."
So I've got that going for me...
which is nice.
