Having visited for the first time earlier this month, I can say this about the loss:
The view is stunning. That will still be there whenever whatever is done with the remains of the structure.
The bunker at the base where you catch the mandatory tour bus to the top is still there and to me is more unique and fascinating than Eagle's Nest itself.
The building itself was neat, but nothing crazy other than the view.
I visited about 15 yrs ago. Really cool elevator. Also had a private tour of the U-Boat engine that's used to drive the backup electric generator.
The article stated that a Bavarian state official said it was insured. Don't know what the German fire codes are, but I'm surprised a property as valuable and historic wasn't protected by sprinkler systems. I read the tourism income from ranged from $8-$10 million annually. Could have budgeted sprinklers from those dollars. (Euros).
A new video of the burned Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) by Begafilm. Has pics of internal destruction as well. This company does documentaries on the Obersalzberg/Berchtesgaden area.
