Malcolm X

John Wesley Hardin - love the version by Leon Metz that includes details on the parts that show his fabrications of stories (I guess it's more of a biography but has parts from his original writings)

If we're talking autobiographies, my favorite's likely Colonel David Hackworth's "About Face".

As for biographies, William Manchester's three-volume "The Last Lion" series on the life of Winston Churchill is unbeatable.

I assume memoirs, though similar, are excluded from this but I can think of more of those that are pretty good.

Rickenbacker by Eddie Rickenbacker is one of my favorites.

Yeah, this one was fascinating. And fwiw,if you want to see where Fred Smith got "his" idea to found Federal Express, go to that section at the end of this where Rickenbacker describes his vision for the future...

He was an incredible 20th century figure and lived a roller coaster of a life.

The personal memoirs of Ulysses S Grant

The story behind the memoirs adds to what makes them special. Bankrupt after being cheated by a business partner and dying of throat cancer, Grant wrote his memoir with the publishing support and encouragement of Mark Twain. Grant died days after finishing the memoir, but the proceeds of the book provided for his wife and children and saved them from poverty.

I remember the memoir being a pretty good read, too.

The first in the west and arguably still the best.
