Saw this today regarding new WWII movie coming out in several weeks. I hope it is historically accurate, but the trailer showed almost a Saving Private Ryan beach landing, and I know Okinawa was not like that. My dad was on an ammunition ship unloading supplies the first few days before the Japs unleashed their surprise Kamikazes on the anchored US ships.

Maybe the beach landing is from another island in a flashback or prologue. If this is faithful historical storytelling at all it'd have to be. You're right that the Okinawa landings were virtually unopposed by Ushijima's design.
