I've always been interested in the old European city states, and particularly Venice. I'm taking a trip this summer to Italy and the Dalmatian coast in Croatia, which had a strong Venetian influence for hundreds of years. I'd like to read something in advance that informs and entertains about the Venetian Republic.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. An ideal book would be one that my 18 year old history buff son would also find enjoyable.
