I have to think these guys were some of the most daring sailors the USN has ever seen.

Watching a documentary Ultimate Warfare: Locked and Reloaded. Episode Courage at Sea.

Those guys made an unbelievable sacrifice

My Grandfather was on the destroyer escort USS Dennis during the battle. Not much is mentioned of the Dennis, but they made torpedo runs until they ran out and laid smoke. My Grandfather was in the forward gun, which took a cruiser shell through it. The shell did not detonate and when through the ship exiting just above the water line. My grandfather received the purple heart for being wounded by that shell. The Dennis picked up most of the survivors of the USS St. Lo and years later the Dennis's crew was always invited to the St. Lo reunions.

My grandfather didn't speak of the battle until his late 70's. Once I started reading up on it, I gained a whole new respect for what he did in the Navy. That battle was truly the last great naval battle in history.

The "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" is a very good book on the battle.

The level of detail in that book is outstanding and really gives an idea how terrible naval warfare can be. Had no idea how much action there was in a naval battle. Impressed that one gun on the Samuel B Roberts fired 324 rounds in 35 minutes and that's just one gun, on one ship, out of many.

Same...but I'm not sure I trust Hollywood to make it right...

And you can't call yourself a WWII history fan if you haven't read "Last Stand..." That book is phenominal, and I will be making my son read that in about 12 years when I think he's old enough.

Here's some pics taken during the battle. I can just imagine the pucker factor those sailors on the flight deck must have felt with those shells landing about. Not that they were any safer below deck in those CVEs

In the last pic the circle is supposedly a Japanese cruiser.

This battle just exemplifies the American fighting spirit. Simultaneously makes me proud but also humble. These men were put to the test and were not found wanting. In fact, they became legendary.

And agree with above. "Last Stand..." Is required reading for history lovers.

Quote:

"A large Japanese fleet has been contacted. They are fifteen miles away and headed in our direction. They are believed to have four battleships, eight cruisers, and a number of destroyers. This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can."
This was credited to CDR Ernest Evans of the Johnston, but Wiki is claiming the last half was actually said by LCDR Robert Copeland of the Roberts.

Either way, a hell of a quote.
