Quote:

on May 23 with the nationwide, one-night-only theatrical screening of The Cold Blue, an extraordinary new documentary that makes use of recently discovered battle footage and miraculous film restoration technology. The film is the astounding result of a three-year labor by documentarian Erik Nelson, whose four-decade career includes producing Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man, Discovery Channel's Unsolved History series and numerous World War II documentaries, including Anne Frank's Holocaust. After discovering largely unseen B-17 footage in both American and German archives, Nelson's groundbreaking documentary eventually drew support and contributions from late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch studio, sound design maestro David Hughes (Black Panther, Pirates of the Caribbean series), folk-rock legend Richard Thompson and, most importantly, nine B-17 crewmen, all now in their 90s

Just got back from the show. It was outstanding! Took my two teenage sons to see it. Was just incredible.

I have to say Paul Allen has sunk quite a few pennies preserving WWII history!

Just left. Great movie. The guy at the end credits (already forgot his name) was great. That dude was a trip and a great singing voice. Highly recommend this to anyone when it airs on HBO next month.

Just got back. Excellent job. Seeing all those planes and uniforms in true color was a real treat. We do indeed owe so much to all those WWII vets.

Gosh dang if I didn't get choked up when I read the old man was killed in the P51 crash.

What an incredible documentary.

Yeah, I wish I had Paul Allen's toy box.

Great movie, the restoration of the film was amazing and a service to the country.

I don't think it was quite as amazing as They Shall Not Grow Old., but then again having Peter Jackson at the head of that one is probably an unfair advantage.

The footage was great and I enjoyed the parts with the old vets the most. The documentary itself wasn't that special, though. I think they could have done a much better job of showing just what those guys went through.

Just sent this to my buddy whose dad (all Ags of course) was a navigator for George McGoverns crew.
His dads flight jacket and map are in WWII museum in NOLA. Map had a large clean bullet hole going thru it. Sobering as hell.
Man flew 35 sorties over Italy where the odds were 50/50 you would not come home from the first one.
Wish he were still here to visit with.

Looking forward to this. My grandfather survived the war by being really , rally, really good at football for A&M and the army air corp skymasters.

He lost 2 brothers in b17's over Europe and he would have been with them otherwise.

Thanks for the HBO Go tip. Watched it last night. Those were beautiful airplanes and brave men. I had no idea that the 8th Air Force lost more men than did the entire Marine Corps in WWII (by a wide margin).

That is something that a lot of people cannot wrap the minds around.

Example: September 27, 1944. 445th Bomb Group (B-24s) lost 25 of 39 planes and 115 killed or died of wounds out of 238 crewman on a raid of the city of Kassel, Germany. Only four planes actually returned to their base.

What I still can't wrap my head around is, despite how bad the PTO was; more men died in the air over Germany than the Pacific.

My grandfather reported to Tibenham the day of the Kassel Raid. Needless to say it was not the introduction to the unit he had hoped for.

Had an uncle who was top turret gunner and flight engineer in B-24s in the Pacific. He said they sent his squadron out on a mission that they knew was at or beyond the round trip range of the planes. His and two other planes were the only ones that made it back to base.

I am disappointed they didn't show the German propaganda footage and the numerous interviews with surviving veterans. Those are very enlightening.
