"and there stands Jackson like a stonewall". Was Bernard Bee making a caustic comment about Jackson doing nothing or a compliment about Jackson being stoic in the face of fire?

No one will ever know.

I have stood in the exact same tree line Jackson's men were standing in. I closed my eyes and have seen the elephant.

Manassas I and II battlefields are really nice battlefields. I go there all the time as my brother lives about 16 miles north of there at base of Bullrun Mountain. We take our maps and books and follow particular units. Its very easy to do as terrain is unchanged and NPS has tried to maintain the tree lines as best as possible.

It is an oasis in the sea of urban development though..
