I was curious what Captain St. Jacques had said in French when he discovered the woman's body after the children were abducted by Indians. I still do not know what he said, but research yielded the following story on Pierre "Peter" Ortiz, who is the actor who played St. Jacques. . Awesome story this Memorial Day weekend, so I had to share!

Did you find out what he said? I liked Ken Curtis', the future Festus Haggen, singing w/the Sons of the Pioneers in that movie.

Fascinating read. His story should be a movie in itself. But I doubt that any of the no-talent pretty boy actors of today could play his part.
I love the John Ford cavalry series, best westerns of the period. Possibly some of the best movies ever filmed.

Re Ford--I ran across this 1975 US Army CGSC Master's Thesis entitled...

"JOHN FORD'S CAVALRY TRILOGY: MYTH OR REALITY?"

Interesting reading. From the abstract:

Quote:

"The study analyzes John Ford's films Fort Apache (1948), She

Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950) for their
historical portrayal of the frontier cavalry. Ford is acknowledged
as one of America's foremost chroniclers and mythmakers.
His films comprise a significant body of film and
cultural history, reflect his values and attitudes, and offer
conflicts between historical accuracy and cinematic considerations.
The analysis begins by examining the personal and business
influences shaping Ford's work. The study then examines
each film for historical accuracy in the areas of people,
places, and events; uniforms, equipment, and accouterments;
the profession and garrison life; and finally, the American
Indian and military operations."
