read this over the summer; not sure why but as a kid i loved Robin Olds. probably because he flew everything under the sun.

great read; highly recommend

quote:
"The deliberately planned fighter sweep went just as we'd hoped. The MiGs came up. The MiGs were aggressive. We tangled. They lost."

The consumant warrior leader. I was at Ubon when the war ended in '73. The lobby of the O'Club was lined with pictures of all previous 8TFW commanders. All were in their offices and wearing their blues. Olds was in his flight suit next to an F-4 on the flight line. Met him when he came to Holloman AFB after he wa retired. Col. Bill Kirk (later 4 star) was our wing commander. He had been Olds' IP when he checked out in the F-4. Olds said, "let's spin this SOB" (dash one prohibited maneuver). After the first time, Olds wanted to do it again but the IP in Kirk said no. Kirk brought him in for our TGIF Safety meeting at the O'Club. General Olds had us breathing fire by the end of his impromptu speech. Then the glorification of alcohol began for the evening. I am glad I served when I did, with people I served with. I pity and honor those who serve today yet have to put up with all the PC BS.
