Was having a conversation recently with my wife's cousin, who grew up in Bryan. He told of working at the Deluxe Burger place that was at the corner of Wellborn and University. I ate there a few times while I was a student at A&M in the '80s.

The cousin told me that the building that was the Deluxe (which still stands, abandoned), was actually the concession stand of a drive-in movie theater that once stood at that location.

I had never heard that before. Anyone know if that was the case? From the sound of it the theater would have been there maybe up to the early 70s, although the cousin wasn't really clear as to dates.

I saw a photo once of the corner of University and South College, where the abandoned Albertsons is, from the late 60's and there was a drive in theatre there. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

Second location was about right. The drive in was The Circle Drive In Theater.

That was affectionately called the S L U T HUT for decades. But it did have great hamburgers.
that corner was bought and was schedued to be the Gameday Condos. They failed due to Texas's insane and out of control property tax system that kills the ability of most middle income folks to own a second house. No homestead exemption and no appraisal cap and the criminal tax levels would run up the tax bill to more than the mortgage payment !

Thanks everyone. I had not wanted to doubt his recollection, but I did not really see how the Deluxe could have been part of a drive-in theater. The location y'all describe makes a lot more sense.

AH yes the famous **** Hut. Good burgers. There was a drive in behind what was the Albertsons off University. At one point they had the sound broadcast over an AM radio station. Didn't have to buy a ticket, just park in the parking lot behind the MsDonalds and watch. Toward the end they went to a soft porn format to try and make money. Really didn't need sound for that.

I thought the drive in was razed around 1972.
