We are looking to purchase a book on the American Revolution for my wife's 13 year old godson. His mom told us that he is very interested in the American Revolution and learning more about it. We had a hard time finding anything age appropriate at the book store the other day as there were basically no non-fiction history books for this age group; only a few teen fiction novel series set in past time periods (and loads of pop culture books). The "adult" books all seemed to heavy for someone this age.

Any recommendations would be great. Thanks.

You might try this one. It has some great reviews.

Johnny Tremin...great book (novel) for that age kid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Tremain

I also liked most all of Howard Fast's history-based Revolutionary war novels:

I forgot about the Johnny Tremain book (The Sons of Liberty!)

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll take a look at those.

An oldie but goodie history for young people is Col. Red Reeder's The Story of the Revolutionary War you might find it on-line at Abe books.

Here are the used sellers on Amazon, looks like the shipping might be slightly less than the book itself ($7.69):

1776 might work.

I was think 1776 would be good too... it's not too long or detailed and I think most 13 year-olds could handle it!

You mean the David McCullough book?

Yep, I thought it was a fairly easy read.

I thought Founding Brothers was one of the most interesting books I read on that period. Might have some concepts that would be tough for a 13-year-old, but that would just give him a chance to talk to someone.
