Solar or AMOLED?
I am outside 60% of the time. Running and gym 50/50. Mainly interested in something that holds up to travel and abuse

I'd go AMOLED, the solar is cool but really only buys you like an extra 12 hours of battery life.

That's the way I was leaning , just wasn't sure how visible the AMOLED is in full sun

I've never had any issues with full sun (or polarized sunglasses or other typical screen problem culprits) with my AMOLED screen. I have it on a Forerunner, but I imagine the technology is the same. I can't help you with the solar versus AMOLED thing, though.

I have the Instinct 2 Solar & only need to charge about once every 40-50 days depending upon how much I'm outdoors.

How often do you need to charge the amoled? It seems like it wouldn't get near the battery life of the Solar.
Can 100% vouch for the Solar 2's toughness, it's been on my wrist under 75' water Scuba Diving, on 9 day canoe trip in Candadian Wilderness & working/hunting for hundreds of hours outdoors.

I should have clarified, the solar will get better battery life, but it's not because of the solar charging which only incrementally aids in battery life. I have solar on my Fenix and it maybe gets me an extra 12 to 18 hours when I'm outside a lot, but I pretty much have a routine of charging my watch every Saturday, so it's really irrelevant anyway.
My wife has the AMOLED screen on her Garmin and I'm jealous of how detailed and sharp it is compared to my Fenix 6.

Perhaps the solar is better on the Instinct. I gain days of extra battery if I'm in the sun enough.
I charged my watch about 10 days ago & am currently sitting at 87% battery life.

I just looked it up and it appears you are correct that the solar charging on the instinct is more effective and impactful on total battery life. Also I'm guilty of living in the past as it seems they've improved the solar charging on all their lines over my Fenix 6.

I think I'd still opt for the AMOLED but it's interesting that there is a significant difference between Fenix and Instinct in this regard.

I have the amoled and only need to charge it once every other week. Most use (besides daily wearing) is tracking runs and workouts. Probably will use battery faster on higher GPS intensity activities. I keep my screen at the lowest brightness and it's very visible.

I have the Instinct 3 Tactical AMOLED. It lasts 2 weeks. I didn't think the extra battery with solar was worth the downgrade in screen legibility. You can easily see the AMOLED outside in sun.
