How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sleep Apnea runs in our family and I recently purchased an oxygen monitor to check my oxygen levels overnight. The oxygen monitor showed eight dips with over 4% drop last night.
What do y'all suggest at this point? Have y'all had success with anything besides a CPAP?
I'm in Aggieland and would appreciate any recommendations for a doctor to handle this.
Also, if I have to go the CPAP route, is there any equipment that y'all can recommend or stay away from?
Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

A lot of good data in this thread about it.

I used a CPAP machine for almost nine months. Tried multiple masks, but couldn't find one that really worked for me. It was costing me sleep.

Since last July I have been using an "oral apnea appliance". It is a two piece (upper and lower) appliance that interlocks and forces your lower jaw forward, opening the air path. It is custom made to fit your mouth and administered by specially trained dentists. There are several different solutions like this out there. It has worked wonders for me and I highly recommend it.

Just to add to this:

1. It's called a MAD appliance (mandibular advancement device)
2. If by specially trained, you mean we take a few Continuing Education hours……..sure………we're specially trained.
3. By state board rules…….you have to have a sleep study done before we make one for a patient.
4. It works well for mild to mild-mod apnea, but should not be used for mod to severe apnea.

I wear one myself……..very mild apnea………I love it.

Once upon a time you could make them with no training and no sleep study. I think we were drawing away a lucrative revenue stream from some physicians. Out of jealousy, they were saying it could be dangerous to give someone an appliance if they had severe apnea……..possibly contribute to their death. Complete Horse excrement of course………..but……..the power of lobbying kicked in and we had restrictions placed on us.

1. Sleep study required.
2. 4 CE hours on apnea every 2 years.

Yeah, my pcp definitely said that cpap was the gold standard, but he did have any issues the appliance.
I am absolutely sleeping better and loved not lugging the cpap to Europe last year on our Danube cruise.
