Hi everyone-
Wanted to get thoughts on caretaker services in the Sugar Land area. My dad has pancreatic cancer and is currently in the hospital having just had a thrombectomy to clear out clots across his lungs and an IVC filter installed (prevent further clots from moving north). Also had some coils installed in a vessel in his bowel that was bleeding. Needless to say he's had a lot going on snd will moving forward.

My dad is 6'3", 280lbs and mom is 5'3" 100lbs so she will be in need of a reputable caregiver to help out given his size. We trust the Aggie community and would love any feedback on who yall have used in the Houston and Sugar Land areas. As many know these services can vary greatly and using someone or a company that yall recommend would bring reassurance he will be in good hands.

Thank you so much!!

Not in Houston but this should likely hold true anywhere. For my grandmother, Parkinson's with nearly no mobility, the ONLY way my grandfather found any reliable and honest help was outside of companies/services.

Make sure that any valuables are not available and either locked up or off site. Documents and identification such as social security needs to be closely guarded as well.

You will find that the quality of caregivers increases exponentially the more you pay but keep in mind that when you go through services, those caregivers are not getting much. Explains why theyre typically unreliable, dishonest and never to be truly depended upon as they have HIGH turnover rates.

Good luck and I'm right there with you. My parents are also in Sugar Land, dad has advanced Parkinson's and is immobile without a lot of assistance.

I lucked into a private caregiver through mom's friends and she has been a godsend. She found a second person, which worked for awhile but they were both working 7 days a week. Finally gave up trying for a 3rd private caregiver and went with Home Watch. Went with that agency because they contract with Landon Ridge, where I hope to have my parents move soon. I can't recommend them yet, we just signed up and first weekend is this one.

If you can, ask on Nextdoor and/or try friends of friends to find private help. It is not easy to find someone.

Agree with locking things - I changed out door knobs and am locking their study in preparation for agency workers to be in the home.

We don't have camera's in the home, but that is something else to consider. If your mom is around, securing things and monitoring your dad's care isn't as much of an issue though.
