Frozen Shoulder

Anyone here endured this or have experience treating it? Wife has had it in both shoulders, and concerned it is recurring in one shoulder.

Definite mobility restriction, but not as severe movement limitations as often reported. But pain fairly constant and at times unbearable.

Cortisone shot worked for one shoulder but not the other. PT only seems to aggravate the pain, and again pain not mobility is the primary issue. X-rays & evaluation confirms no structural damage and no sign of arthritis.

Any comments & insights are appreciated.

I treat this a fair amount. It can be really tricky. Usually women between 40-60 years old. Worse if they are perimenopasual/menopausal. Worse if they have diabetes. If they are in the early stages a cortisone injection can be helpful to help reduce pain. If it is later on and they are more restricted by motion, then a cortisone injection typically doesn't help as much. I found that an injection saline solution into the capsule to swell it up or burst it works well to improve range of motion. Not many docs do this.

Tell your wife to follow Dr Vonda Wright. She has tons of info about the skeletal-muscular symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause. She talks a lot about frozen shoulder and how to treat it.

Platelet-rich Plasma Injections & ultrasonic therapy worked pretty good when I had a bad case of frozen shoulder. Toradol injections for pain relief

I've had it in both shoulders at different times. In the right shoulder, I had a full capsule release done, it was a newer procedure at that time (2010). They severed all of the ligaments in the shoulder. I walked out of the surgery center in less pain than when I walked in. It still took several years to regain full motion, but after surgery, I was able to reach above my head and the back pocket in my jeans.

For the left shoulder, I didn't do anything, I never even went to the doctor for it. It wasn't as bad and cleared up after several years.

Thank you for your responses and sharing your experiences & advice. We are located in GA. My wife is at the upper end of the 40-60 yr old range. No diabetes, but thyroid issues.

We have been doing the deep dive on Vonda Wright, and strongly believe it is tied to menopause and estrogen/hormone levels. Pursuing that in combination with NSAIDs & PT.
