Torn Achilles

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I suffered a 90% torn Achilles two weeks ago, although my specialist says no surgery due to the location of the tear.

On crutches/scooter for at least 6 weeks depending on progress, and in a boot for 10 weeks.

Swelling has reduced over 2 weeks but still painful and having to take at least 1 Advil and usually 2 per day. Decent amount of pain on side of foot and in big toe.

Anyone on here gone through this? And feedback?

I had a complete tear several years ago. I elected to repair it non surgical even though surgery was recommended. 4 weeks total in two different hard casts. 1 week in boot non weight baring. Additional week in boot 50% weight bearing and started PT. Two more weeks in boot weight beared as tolerated. By week eight I was in a tennis shoe. The PT will/should push you to do more than you think you can do. . It will make you nervous sometimes that they want you to do things that will cause rerupture. My results were fantastic. The rapid non surgical method is the way to go in my experience. I never had much pain after the initial rupture. In fact it fixed my planter fasciitis in that foot.

I reread your post and if I understand it correctly your specialist wants you on a scooter for 6 weeks and a boot for 10 more weeks? 16 weeks before you really start using the foot? I don't know your complete diagnosis but that seems very conservative. The rapid treatment method has shown better results and reduced rerupture than conservative treatment. In fact rapid non surgical has similar to even better results (depending on study) than surgery.

Yeah my phrasing was a little misleading… it's 10 weeks total in a boot, with 6 weeks on scooter and 4 weeks just boot.

Swelling has decreased and pain has dropped to requiring zero Advil most days, so I'm hopeful.

Guess I'll join the group. I tore my Achilles last Friday. Doctor thought I could get away with not having surgery based on the location of the tear. Just waiting on the doctor to review the MRI so I can get a confirmation. Fun times!

Mine was playing basketball as well. Tried to literally run in a straight line (cutting to the rim) and it just gave out.

Think we should stay away from basketball courts haha. I actually had to have surgery on mine (had it on Wednesday). Doc said it was one of the worst tears he'd seen in awhile. Part of the tendon shot up into the calf area so I have pretty big cut from calf down to my ankle.

Yikes. I was very relieved to hear that I would not need surgery. Hopefully your recovery isn't too bad
