Different fitness apps, wildly different calorie counts

Like one is over double the other. Both apps have me listed at the same weight (215 lbs).

I went for a walk this evening. 1.77 miles, 24:24 time.

Live tracking with Runkeeper (also source of time and distance) said 278 calories.

I input the same time and distance data into the app that goes with my fitness band (Garmin Vivosmart). 119 calories.

That's a huge difference.

Your fitness band likely factors in your heart rate. If you were using runkeeper through your phone, it obviously does not. Your second number sounds like it's probably more accurate. Walking doesn't usually burn a ton of calories.

If you are worried about calories, focus on your diet, especially once you get into your 30's and beyond. Food is 90% of the battle.

1 mile ~ 100 calories, adjust a little for how fast or slow you're going.

Second number is a little low, but closer to being more accurate.

Then you are going to have to start running a lot further.

I am super fun to hang out with. I'm refueling after my run this morning with mimosas.

And I prefer pullups to situps brah.

It takes what it takes, unfortunately.

This is why you don't count on technology. Call me old school but there are numerous studies showing apps and such can be off by 40%.

It's not the only tool in the toolbox- it's just an adjunct. If you are familiar with its shortcomings it's still very useful. But it's definitely not required

kinda off topic, but i've stopped paying attention to Orange Theory's calorie count.

As a 42 year old (5'11" 190 lbs), their algorithm says I burn 650 calories with a 120 avg HR in a 60 min class. They call it 'active' calories; I call it 'misleading.'

Learning to count calories was very difficult for me. First I thought that the portions would be too small. However, after consulting the doctor and learning some more info, I don't feel hungry at all. So if everything is dome correctly, this is a good way to loose weight.
