What's the standard for closing pools for lightning? I checked online and most I saw is 6 miles, including the national lightning safety institute and the Red Cross. But these sites also refer to 30 seconds between lightning and thunder, 6 miles, when everyone now has an app that notifies them exactly where the lightning is.

We joined a new pool in houston and their standard is 10 miles. Seems there is always lightning within 10 miles of you in houston.the last few times I've tried to swim it was closed, went to our gym (outdoor pool also) and it remained open so got my laps in there.

I'm guessing you're referring to the Heights pool. I was particularly pissed yesterday. Blue sky as far as the eye could see yet they were claiming lightening at 9.6 miles so they kept it closed. That is beyond ridiculous.

My old Masters coach claims that there has never been a verified death from a pool lightening strike. Now, I don't believe him and wouldn't dream swimming during an actual storm, but that's his claim.

Yep. Yesterday during lunch, went to swim at lifetime instead. Finished my workout and noticed I got like 5 notifications from the heights pool about the closure extended because of lightning 9 miles away.

He may be referring to indoor pools? In some of my brief research I went down a rabbit hole of closing indoor pools because of lightning. The suggestions were mixed, but they did point out that nobody has been killed from lightning while swimming indoors.

About one person a year in the US dies from lightning while in water.
