Does anyone have preassembled bicycles for sale these days? I was looking for one for my 14 year old son and ordered one off academy's website but it didn't fit him (ugh) so I returned it and want to find one where he can actually sit on it and try it out before I buy next time. We're looking for a 26 ". I assume I'll need to wait until the pandemic is over because academy, wal mart, etc. are all out but I wanted to ask here. I'm in Fort Worth FYI. Thanks!

Go to a real bicycle store where they have people that know what they are doing.

I went to a nicer bicycle shop here in San Antonio; the owner told me I would have to wait for the 2021 models to arrive (July-August). From what I've heard from my friends, it's hard to find a bicycle right now.

Yeah that's what I figured. I did go to Mellow Johnny's in the Clearfork area just to look around one day but they are WAY out of my price range which I figured would be the case there. But I haven't checked some smaller bike shops and since it's for my son, probably will stick with Academy or some other sporting goods store. But any suggestions are welcome!

people at a real bike shop know how to assemble bikes. People who assemble bikes at places like Academy may or may not know how to assemble bikes (likely not based on my observations). If you do get a bike at Academy or similar store, at least take it to a real bike shop immediately after purchase so that they can give it the once-over to ensure it's safe to ride and assembled correctly.

Just a word of warning/question...

I bought a Huffy cruiser at Academy a while back. The chain snapped, and we have not been able to find a replacement chain that fits (we've tried several). My son is pretty handy with bike repairs (he has his own bike that he works on), and he just cannot make one work.

I suppose I could take it to a bike shop for repair, but I haven't done that, yet.

Made me wonder if the cheap bikes aren't made to be "disposable".

Have you looked on Huffy's website for replacement parts?

get a chain tool and remove links to fit.

They don't sell chains on their website. After trying 2 or 3 different store-bought chains, I concluded I'd probably just have to take it to a bike shop. Just never got around to it.

It's just annoying because my son has a $700+ Trek bike and he can change that chain himself with no problems. Why should a $200 Huffy not be just as easy to repair yourself?

That's what what we (my son) did. None of them fit properly. After removing links, the chain was either just slightly too short or slightly too long. Tried several different chains, all with the same problem.

I googled it at one point. I'm not the only one who has had this problem.

They do. I had to buy one for my daughter's bike and found it here.

Thanks...I has always just looked for something "off the shelf". Didn't realize I had to know where and when I bought the bike and the exact model number to get a replacement. This is a pretty cheap/simple bike; you'd think you could get the part just about anywhere (I think we've tried chains from Wal-Mart, Ace, and the bike store that does the more complicated repairs on my sons bike).

I'll put that info in when I get home and see what it tells me. The bike is about 8-9 years old at this point, so hopefully I can still get what I need.

As far as being slightly too long or too short on the huffy, you should be able loosen the rear axle bolt and slide the wheel a touch in or out to make the chain tight before tightening the nuts back down, there should be a little adjustment available there.

So, I entered the model number of my bike on the Huffy website, and it says "item not found". But when I google the number, I can find pictures of my exact bike.

I'm going to complete a customer service request on the Huffy website and see what they say.

As far as the rear axle bolt goes, my son has spent hours trying to reinstall a new chain. I would think he tried that, but I don't know for sure. If I can get a new chain, I'll tell him to do that when he gets home in a few weeks.

Go to Dicks SG. For a big box retailer, they do very well with bikes. They have individuals that assemble the bike, fit the bike to you and explain how the bike works. They warranty their product and their work, but the best thing is they do all the work right in the store you buy the bike at.

Does Dick's currently have a lot of bikes in stock to look at? That's been my problem.

No they do not. Bikes are just not available right now. Demand went nuts just like it did for home fitness equipment.

Did you have to go through customer service to order your chain?

After getting an error message on their website when I entered the bike info, I emailed customer service With the model number. Customer service emailed me back with a part number and price ($4.99), and the email said "Contact Huffy customer service to order the part."

So, I just sent an email back to that exact same address requesting to order the part. Gave the part number, my name, and address, and said I would give payment info when someone confirms I can order the part.

Not sure why it's so difficult to get a $4.99 part...
