These last two nights have been a PITA. I get the worst post nasal drip at the back end of a cold and have to end up sleeping in the recliner to get some relief. NyQuil doesn't do anything for the cough. What OTC is the best that will get me at least 6 hours of relief?

Watching. Sinus hit me like a ton of bricks two days ago. Nasty phlegm.

Robitussin cough usually works pretty well for me.

I haven't tried that one but at 97% alcohol I'm sure it would work.

Musinex pm
Sudafed pm

You need something to make you rest. And cough drops.

Those are just suggestions.

Non-prescription cough medicines don't work. Your best bet is to dry out your nose/sinuses.

Even the prescription stuff really isn't that great, short of the really strong stuff.

Had a nasty cough couple years back that OTC or Rx meds wouldn't touch. Only thing that worked was a teaspoon of honey and shot of whiskey at night. Life saver. Best of luck.

There are suppressants like dextromethorphan (DM) and expectorant Ronitussin - mucinex (guaifenesin). They don't really work.

However, if your drip is due to allergies, try OTC zyrtec and go ahead with 400mg to 600 MG of mucinex twice a day with a crap load of water or hot tea with honey to cough out all your gunk from your lungs.

It should help.
Good Luck.

It's not due to allergies, picked up a cold from our lovely 18 month old. For years now, when I get a cold I get over them quick but the post nasal drip can last a week or longer. Mussinex did nothing for me last night, so I slept in the recliner again. The angle of the recliner seems to be perfect and I sleep straight through the night. I'll probably just do that until it clears up from now on.

Post viral inflammation. If it's from the mucous, get Sudafed. If that doesn't work, a short course of steroids will usually do the trick.

Yep, or reactive airway - in which case your best bet would be to use an inhaler.

Sorry, but you gotta go to Rediclinic and get some purple drank.
