Anyone ever perform a liver cleanse?

Just curious if anyone has done something like this and with yesterday having been St. Patrick's, I figured today was as good a day as any to ask.

If you have, did you use a home remedy, kit, brand solution (like an Advocare thing), or a shaman in Austin (yes, I know someone who uses a shaman in Austin)?

And yes, I am being 100% serious. I'm curious if this is all just hippy voodoo or if it really is something that would be beneficial for most people.

I've heard of people going this route, but it just sounds rough and misguided: http://health.usnews.com/best-diet/master-cleanse-lemonade-diet

Goal would literally be to just flush or cleanse my system a bit and if I lose a pound in the process then that is fine by me.

I cleansed a liver during gross anatomy years ago. Very fatty. Would not recommend.

Just stop abusing it for a day or two, one of the only organs that has regenerative properties.

I had a period of time last year or so where my blood work showed "elevated liver enzymes". No booze for 6 weeks while we monitored and did other testing.

I asked the doctor about the cleanses and supplements out there. His opinion, if there was something out there that worked, he would tell me about it.

Healthy lifestyle was his recommendation.

I have never done the master cleanse and it sounds terrible.

I have done the saltwater mix and it is miserable and you better not be 10 feet from a toilet for about three hours.

Somehow millions of people have become convinced that chemically induced repeated huge dumps are the key to health, personal well being, peace, prosperity, and self actualization

Of course, "make you take a giant growler" wouldn't sell, so they decided to call it "cleanse"

So, sounds like my assumption that its all hippy gibberish was correct.

And huge growlers? That's why I take Metamucil at night and drink 2-3 cups of coffee per day. I even ate a couple prunes this morning!

My main reason for posting was because I may have had way to much to drink last Friday (although it really wasn't any real crazy amount that would normally give me a horrible hangover). I felt a little hungover early Saturday and threw up a couple of spicy peppers that I had for dinner Friday that apparently hadn't digested at all in 13 hours. I felt fine for a few hours and did a few things around the house. I was then hit hard with nausea, aches, headache, and just a bad pain in my stomach. It didn't feel like a hangover I had ever had before, so I'm not sure if it was a hangover.

I continued feeling horrible the rest of the day, took a couple naps, went to bed really early, and hardly ever left the couch. The breakfast I had was thrown up around noon and I was only able to keep down a banana and granola bar (along with a bit of water) for the rest of the day. Woke up Sunday feeling better but still bad, had oatmeal and a small glass of milk (which helped), and forced my day along as if I was fine. Ran errands, had an extremely small pasta lunch, a few snacks during the afternoon to keep me going, and a medium sized pasta dinner (leftovers from lunch). I went to bed really early again because I wasn't feeling great and had to be up at 5 for work.

Woke up Monday for work, felt worse than Sunday, but a little better than Saturday. Emailed in that I would be in around lunch. Got more sleep, still felt horrible, ate oatmeal for breakfast, took nap, got ready for work, had lunch (chicken noodle soup), and wanted to vomit more. Decided to stay in as I just felt horrible. Napped more, and around 3 or 4 started feeling a little more normal. Had an appetite so actually enjoyed soup leftovers for dinner.

Since then I've been mostly fine and plan on returning to a lightened exercise routine today. My wife originally thought I was just really hungover and needed to get over it. Now we think I may have had a bug, that could have been aided by the alcohol. I typically eat pretty well (much better than average, but nothing like some of the hardcore people on this board) and try not to overindulge on the drinks. I also try to exercise 3-4 times a week at a minimum. Friday night I had pizza (bought for babysitter and had a couple slices before heading out for the night w/ wife) w/ peppers and plenty of beer at the bar. I'm wondering if I just shocked my system from having such bad food and large quantities of toxic beer, or if it truly was a viral or bacterial thing I had going on.

Viral and bacterial things generally get sorted out on their own, but if I did shock the crap out of my system with a night out like a college kid, is there anything other than just rest, tons of water, and getting back to my normal routine of healthy food and exercise, that I can do to make sure I'm 100% in the clear? I rarely get sick and never have health issues (other than a cholesterol level that teeters just above 160), so feeling like that for the past few days really bugs the hell out of me. Long post I know, but seriously wondering what the hell was going on the last few days (and I hate going to the doctor, unless I really think I'm going to die)!

I think you got sick at the same time you drank a bit too much. A mild hangover clears itself in 12-24 hours.

Cleansing the liver (if there really were such a thing) is different than intestinal cleansing (ala "master cleanse" ).

Read up on what the liver does. It isn't hard to figure out how to give it a break.

I have a friend who did a liver cleanse.

Not sure how effective it was in actually cleansing his liver, but he told me he spent the entire day going back and forth from his toilet every 15-20 minutes. Lots of "cleansing" out the back end.

I watched a video on one a while back. I can't find it right now, but I know it included mixing olive oil, lemon, and water. Drinking a bunch of glasses at once, or something like that.

It's called drinking water.

I think you are spot on with the viral syndrome. It was likely circulating around hoping to overwhelm your immune system and by overdrinking & staying up too late you distracted your immune system and let it have a party across your entire body. With rest & rehydration you should return to baseline within 5-7 days.

Liver cleansers you see at vitamin stores are only there for people using oral AAS (winstrol, anavar, primo, dbol etc). If you aren't poisoning your liver, water should be fine.

They are marketed for recreational drug usage too. In the end, they are all crap.
